In preparation for this week’s Friday Fashion Lab, this week is a great time for closet-cleaning. Typically, in this blog, I bring you the “long-hand” method of figuring out what to wear; in this case, I am cutting right to the chase.
If you could eliminate one look from the landscape, what would it be? Here’s mine.
Ladies, if you are over 35, the following should no longer be any part of your wardrobe:
- Reverse silhouette pants, aka relaxed fit. You may choose straight leg, boot cut, boyfriend fit, flare, easy fit, stovepipe, cigarette leg, skinny fit, or any number of other designations. But no harem pants.
- What my daughter calls “those obnoxious big sweaters”. If the shape of your sweater resembles a sweatshirt, it must be smooth, fine and drapy. No nobby knits and awkward embellishments.
- Mini-skirts. While just above the knee is okay, above that looks at best dated and at worst desperate. A straight black skirt, 4 inches above the knee, is not classic.
Check out where your style idiom places you on the Fashion Train, and shoot for congruence. When in doubt, get your best contemporary friend to help you sort through your stuff. Or ask us. This Friday.
I cannot agree more about the mini-skirts. It drives me crazy to see older women wearing mini skirts. ugh!
By, the way, we should consider doing a clothing swap thing with a bunch of readers. Everyone has to turn one thing in…take a picture with the size, and trade around. I always hear about those, but have never been involved in one. It might be fun and could turn into a regular event. We would just have to figure out how to do organize it, and everyone has to give something that is wearable and not junk! I have 5 closets full of clothing…and many still have tags still attached. (Really, I swear that I am controlling my spending now…I have not purchased ANYthing on my credit cards in almost 7 months so that my debt will go down!!)
Elleabelle, you are a genius! I have a heep of clothing too, lots of stuff that’s new with tags, although I bought most of it at the thrift store.
More to come on this topic!
