Problems in higher ed are complex. The contemporary American university is a complicated system; Eastern Washington University, where I study, is no different. For some, navigating the system proves no more than a minor challenge. However, far too many students encounter a frustrating maze of roadblocks: inaccurate advising, incomprehensible professors, impersonal programs, missing information. Transformational change is needed.
In the meantime, though, my Senior Capstone is establishing an open forum in which those who have been through the system can tell their stories for the benefit of those who are considering the various programs offered at EWU. If one student avoids a disruptive upper division major change, we will have made a difference.
