What to Shop for the First Week of February

Thrift:

  • Suits.  This is a good time in the fashion cycle to be wearing the matching skirt suit.  Recently I found a black/white silk tweed at Goodwill for $7.99.  It had to be really old (Ann Taylor size 6 jacket and size 10 skirt?) but looked completely contemporary.
  • Jeans.  Buying jeans thrift is a huge money saver.
  • Boots, if you don’t already have too many pairs.

Stores:  Hit the clearance racks, if at all possible!  Just the other day I heard a story unlike any I’ve ever heard before:  customer gets to the register with items marked-down to roughly a quarter of their original price, expecting them to be discounted another 50% off their marked-down price; instead they ring up at $0.00!

Online:  baby stuff and maternity, if you need it; cashmere sweaters; and it’s not too soon to think about swimwear.

  1. Can you give some more insight into buying jeans thrift? It seems like all I can find are either low-riders (which definitely don’t work for me) or really dull jeans. (i.e. the kind I’m fine wearing to muck in the garden, but not in the run-into-town category).

I also seem to be a little too short for regular height jeans (and probably a little too tall for petite!)

I finally broke down and bought a nice, dark, natural-waist pair on clearance at Target, although it still is too long in the legs. But I plan to wear it mostly with heels.

  2. Yes, I will try. Sometimes it takes awhile before you find something. 🙂 How long is your inseam? Mine, I think, is around 30, which makes it pretty easy to get regular jeans to be the right length; shorts are just a tad too short.

The other day I felt sorta silly. Dd and I went to Value Village and while she was in the fitting room I saw a really cute pair on the “hang-back” rack – $1, Ann Taylor, they looked really new. But they were a petite, so I didn’t try them on. On the way home, dd told me about the pair of jeans she bought, an 8 S, White House/Black Market. She said if she hadn’t read the blog, it would never have occurred to her to try on a short, but she is going to wear them tucked into boots this winter and cuffed up in the spring!

The low-rider thing, I’m afraid, is going to be a problem for awhile. For thrifting, it might not be bad to measure the rise that works for you, saving yourself some trips into the fitting room.

One more thing: do you have a Ross near you? I got a pair of Express jeans at the Ross here awhile ago. I did buy a size bigger than I usually would have and now I’m so glad I did. I’ve had them for quite a while and I think that has helped with the low-rise thing.

More later! have a lovely weekend! Maybe we can begin assembling a list of fits that work for long torsos. 🙂

  3. I love to look at the hang back rack, too.

I would think thrifted jeans would be easier to come by, though more
expensive, at a resale shop. More likely to attract donors who must
have the latest cuts and owners are likely to judge donations for
    saleability.

  4. Here we have Plato’s Closet, which buys stuff from people and only takes current styles. The benefit is not having to sort out the really dated and scrappy stuff. It is a franchise, so perhaps others have experience with the chain?
