Friday Fashion Lab: A Question of Sleeve Lengths

Many thanks to Chrs for the question and the pictures for this sleeve-length fashion lab!  A previous sleeve-length fashion lab tested the affect wearing a 3/4 length (or pushed up) sleeve has on visual length of the legs; the question before us now is:

what affect, if any, does sleeve length have on the apparent length of the top?  Do any of these tops look shorter or longer than they really are because of the length of the sleeves?

  1. I’ll be honest, the background is distracting me a bit… but here are my thoughts:

Upon a quick glance, the shirt with the shortest sleeves looks the longest. After further study, I note that the 3/4 sleeves definitely makes that top look shorter, probably due to the distance between the end of the sleeves and the bottom hem of the shirt.

  2. Probably saying way more than you asked for. . .

I like the sleeveless top best–fits the golden ratio. In general, I think it’s best for a girl to show her wrists. Otherwise the arm can look thick and stumpy instead of showing that inward curve. Besides, if you can show a curve with modesty, go for it!

This girl looks so cute in knit tops, too. I think you had an article that talked about matching softer body parts to draping and leaner parts to crispness? Well, the knit top works for her that way. I’d like to see a fashion lab about that. I’d also like to see this girl in trousers, skinnies, or more formal jeans.

That is a great shade of blue denim for her, though. It’s about as dark as her hair, which is usually what works, and I think the feathering works for her.

Side note about hair–it’s so cute in pictures one and three! Another golden thing?

  3. Jennifer -thanks for giving it a shot! I wonder if that’s how 3/4 length sleeves make your legs look longer?

Probably – good comments. I noticed her hair too, I think it is a golden thing. She’s pretty cute, even in faceless pictures with distracting background. 😉

  4. I hadn’t even thought about the knits yet… that would make a good fashion lab. She definitely looks trimmer in the sleeveless top.

And another question… the jeans look too long on her. Is this just the fashion or were you trying to make the legs appear to go to the floor without throwing shoes into the lab to distract us?

  5. I have an idea for a fashion lab, something that’s been bugging me for ages: comparision between a thin belt and a thick belt, both worn on the waist as well as low slung on the hips, with trousers and a skirt. How does the thickness of the belt and its placement affect the figure ?
