Travel Tips: Jet Lag

I’m home. Leaving Trieste Tuesday morning (April the 8th) around 6:30 am and arriving in Spokane Tuesday evening around 9:30 pm combined with the 9 hour time difference had us traveling for 24 hours straight, the vast majority of which was daylight!

On the return trip I wore the same comfy black slacks and slip-on flats, but I paired them with a very light cotton button-up shirt over a tank and a cashmere cardigan which I was able to take off and roll up and store in my carry-on if need be. It was just the thing.

Concerning jet lag, I have very little experience in the finer points of adjusting. Going to Italy didn’t prove to be any kind of problem (the espresso?), but I’m told coming this direction is much worse. I tried unsuccessfully yesterday afternoon to take a nap and found I was fine until about 8 pm (I think the daylight makes far more difference than I realized). Tonight I will try to go to bed when it gets dark.

What other tips do you have to offer?

More pics coming soon. 8)

  1. The only tip I can think of and since you are home its probably too late is to drink lots of water. Supposed to help with jet lag. But that’s before and during the trip. I don’t know if it helps after. Looking forward to hearing your take on European fashion.

  2. Eating by the clock (that is, at meal time wherever I am), as opposed to when I am hungry, also helps me adjust faster. Welcome home!

  3. Welcome back!! Looking forward to the pix!

And what Shari said. Going immediately to the current time zone, rather than trying to phase into it. (Of course, I’m still waking up at 04:00 Perth time …)

  4. I think that’s what we did on the way over. And on the way back, after taking a small nap on the plane, I had my first cup of coffee at 7 am Pacific time, even though it was actually something like 4 in the afternoon.

I hope I didn’t just mess myself up by taking a nap this afternoon. Trouble is the evening meetings. Last night I had something I had to do which kept me up until 10, so I couldn’t just go to bed when I should have. Oh, and the morning meetings. Thursdays I’m up and gone before 6:30. But then an afternoon nap is part of my regular Thursday schedule, I’m just not usually as tired as I was today. 🙂

  5. You’re such a trooper for dealing with jet lag while leading a dozen preschoolers! You deserve a medal. 🙂
