Thrift Score: February 4th, 2008

imgp4999.JPGYesterday I was blessed with the opportunity to go thrifting with my older daughter. Have I ever mentioned that we drive by an outstanding coffee “hut” (I don’t know about where you live, but here they are on about every corner), one that offers $1 mochas every Monday?

What I bought:

  • three-quarter sleeve coral cardigan.  A summer staple.  ($1)
  • plain, dark, bootcut 100% cotton (The Limited) jeans.  Still not the perfect jeans I’ve been looking for but for $1 I’m confident I’ll get my money’s worth.
  • (Brand new with tags) Outback Trading Company shirt-shaped microsuede jacket.  Definitely not my idiom.  Wondering why I bought it?  My hero loves his fleece that color, I thought he’d be honored if I bought it to wear on Saturdays when I’m running around with him.  ($14.99)  Besides that, it looks good on.

Grand total:  $18.43.

I still need to get downtown this week, to the good stores.  Have you made any significant scores recently?

  1. I recently thrifted a great reversible floaty skirt ($3) in gorgeous shades of aqua, teal, and chocolate brown–perfect colors for me. I like the slightly asymmetrical hem, although I never would have gone looking for it; I am already wearing the skirt with tall heeled brown boots, but I think it will be even better with sandals. Also got a NWT gap fleece ($2), a probably NWOT Orvis l/s tee ($1), and a really nice long denim skirt ($3). All of this haul was on one day at my favorite Salvation Army! 🙂

  2. Rebecca, I forgot to say that I love the olive jacket–great color! I would happily wear it with something a bit feminine: a longer skirt or a ruffled blouse/jeans. And Frye boots!

  3. Yes, I *did* pick up a fantastic find the other day. For a few dollars I found a “Lux” bubble skirt in the kind of army material my best skirt is made out of. And it’s black, which is good for me because I consider it a neutral. It’s really cute with black leggings underneath.

  4. As a matter of fact I have! lol

I took a spin around the Goodwill yesterday for the first time in a couple months. I found ties for the boys at $1 each and a handful of 29¢ jewelery – manager special for misc mix & match. I got several pairs of earrings with two being vintage(!), a broach, and a really chunky pearl necklace that I had to restring. I picked up a new purse too, but at $3.99, it wasn’t really a bargain.

I’ll skip mentioning the $2.50 polycarbonate champane flutes I nabbed on clearance at Target. 😉

  5. As I’m not a thrifter, my “finds” aren’t at near your price points, Rebecca. 😉 But I’m thrilled with my two pairs of final markdown darkwash jeans, both at less than 40% of the original sticker price. One is pair of Citizens of Humanity black Huttons that I’m sure will give me oodles of “smart casual” wear.

Next up on the big list: tees!

  6. It wasn’t exactly recent, and not at a Rebecca-Rock-Bottom price… but I’m gonna throw it out there since I’m not a regular thrifter (I was once upon a time, but alas, now I work during the hours the best thrift stores in my area are open)

Just before the holiday season I found a gorgeous vintage clutch- just big enough to hold my (fairly small) digital camera/lipstick/hairpins/cash/id- crackled silver with a snap/clasp closure and a dainty silver chain handle that can be tucked in. Handmade, locally, sometime in the 50s-60s. Absolutely beautiful and in perfect condition, for $3.50. It makes me giddy just thinking about it. I display it in my room with my shoes. 🙂

  7. I found brand new Clarks Artisan wedge sandals for $9.99 at Goodwill. They are so cute and even comfortable, and much more chic than the dansko sandals I wore when pregnant. 🙂 Never thought I’d say anything negative about danskos considering how good my feet feel, but these wedge sandals are definitely cuter.

  8. It’s very very hard not to be jealous of $1 days. 🙂

Goodwill is raising their prices it seems, and the nice store in town, that prices individually, is pretty high, ie. a Banana Republic knit top in good shape was $10.

    No scores to share unfortunately.

  9. Your great finds always make my great finds seem like splurges. lol Although I did score relatively good at Kohls about 2 weeks after Christmas. Maternity stuff seems so hard to find, so I was super excited to get a short sleeved black sweater/cape type thing for $6.58 and a 3/4 sleeve pink v-neck for $4.58!
