Teen Staples

I’ve been thinking alot about staples lately. (ka-chunk, ka-chunk, ka-chunk.)

Wardrobe staples: those items which if missing make it almost impossible to get dressed on a daily basis.

Having my wardrobe staples in place enables me to get rid of multiple “almost-right” items. For example, one perfect pencil skirt could replace one that is a little tight (or loose), one that is a little too short (or long), one that is a heavy tweed, and one that’s plaid. Or whatever. I don’t wear skirts everyday.

So maybe that’s not a good example, but you get the idea. 🙂

Lately I have been able to score a number of staples for myself.  (Read more about them at my new page where I am tracking my wardrobe purchases for the year.)

In order that this may become a Teen Style Tuesday post, I have identified four top teen wardrobe staples:

  • Converse - Chuck Taylor All Star 60s Tie Dye Ox (Red/Yellow/Green/Blue) - Men's

  1. I’m going to need tees this year as well. I’ll probably try to get them a little earlier, rather than wait for them to go on clearance.

And, while I have all those items, I don’t consider them staples to the degree my daughters do. The sneaks, for example. My Converse haven’t seen the light of day since the beginning of November, but my daughter who is going to college is still wearing them, even if it means walking through a foot of snow. 🙂

But I love the tie dye – they’d be great for summer!

  2. Black knee high boots. I just can’t find that right pair (or if I do find a pair, they’re very much out of my budget!).
Also, a really good pair of brogue/oxford heels. There are so many out there, but once again, they always have something just not quite right. I’ve found a pair that are close, though, that I may have to check out.

  3. Oh, shopping for footwear can be the hardest! (Bras and jeans too.) But, the good thing is, if you can find the boots you want, you may be able to get them on sale. I certainly hope so! 🙂

  4. You didn’t mention socks, hose, etc. I must wear support knee highs for a circulation problem and really like the little boot. The hose are about $7-8 a pair and I can wear them even after they run with boots and pants. I especially like the bootie with the short heel. In fact, boots (long or short) are the only heel I wear in the winter.

  5. Every spring I find I need a stack of new t-shirts and a couple of lightweight sweaters. (Crewneck tees and trim V-neck sweaters are definitely staples for me in any season.) I don’t wear athletic shoes for anything except sports, and even then I feel a little silly in them. I do have a pair of bowling shoe-type oxfords that I wear for sightseeing and other long walks. With the exception of winter or rain jackets, I’ve never owned any garment with a hood–SO not me! 🙂

  6. Wow, what a great idea to track your wardrobe spending! I might have to steal your idea! It would make an interesting project. I can’t wait to read it as the year progresses. I know you will have the classiest, most quality pieces for your dollar than anyone I know. You always amaze me that way!

Upon reading this post I decided that I am caught between woman and teen style. A lot of my staples are teen staples, but I do have some adult pieces thrown in there…

I need me a pair of black flats for my staples… that is one thing I’ve been thinking lately. They can really dress up an otherwise casual outfit.

  7. Thanks for the vote of confidence, Carrie! I’ve actually been a little bit surprised nobody else has commented on the new page – I’m pretty excited about it.

Don’t be too concerned about being caught between. In my mind, the distinction is that teens dress primarily in leisure styles. Nothing pictured here is “too young” for even someone my age. Do you think that as we mature we like to diversify by getting into nicer casual styles? Although I remember wearing some pretty coordinated outfits to high school. Not everybody approved. 😉

I hope you find some really comfortable black flats. 🙂
