This is a Teen Style Tuesday post for the following reasons:
- This Friday the youth group is having their annual barn party/ hay-ride/ square dance. For the first time ever, we will be going too!
- Teens are notoriously impractical when it comes to dressing warmly, and the weather soothsayers are promising a low of 17 degrees (fahrenheit). Can we all say “brrrr”?
Warm clothing that works with a Western theme:
- Bandana to fill in the neckline on a collared shirt. Pull it up over your face if needed to protect from frostbite.
- Flannel-lined jeans.
- Cowboy hats. My daughter got one at the thrift store (yes, for $1) that says it’s beaver. This past weekend my hero and I were looking at some wool ones for $20.
What else would you recommend?
Surely red union suits would be warm and authentic. 🙂
well, I can’t beat the union suit but I wear lightweight thermal underwear
under everything all winter, day and night.
When you’re on a hayride you’re not moving. The best thing for
that is a silk underlayer. I think I remember you bought some of
that.
Leather “work” gloves (preferably the lined kind). As a former Texan, I can tell you that real cowboys wear down puffer jackets when it’s cold! 🙂
bulky, alpaca wool sweaters were my staple back in college hayrack days – the kind the sweater lady brings from Ecuador, etc – layered with a turtle neck, a denim shirt and a big wool scarf over jeans and 2 pairs of socks inside warm boots. Toes get cold right after the nose, as I recall.
Real cowboys also wear SILK neckkerchief(s) rather than bandanas in cold weather, by the way.
Hey, this has been really helpful!
I agree the union suit would be authentic, festive even! Hope we aren’t using an outhouse. 😉 I go back and forth between wearing flannel lined jeans with silk skivvies under and wearing my wool military pants (I could probably fit regular jeans under them, if I was worried about going inside and getting too warm). I don’t think I’ll go on the hayride.
Last night we got our first snow and I also learned something about this event: the barn isn’t actually big enough to square dance in, so we will be square dancing outside. That, no doubt, means that we will be square dancing in a field — in the snow! lol! I had already pretty much figured that I would wear my “chunk boots” (what the kids call my Sorels), now I’m positive!
I would never have thought of leather work gloves, although I have a nice pair and it’s a great idea. So much to think about! 🙂 I’m sure glad to have the cowboy go-ahead on my down puffer jacket. lol
Ah, Dana, silk makes perfect sense! I’m not certain I’ll find time to track one down, but what I’d like to do for my regular winter warm head wear is to find a cowboy hat and put a silk scarf under it somehow to keep my ears warm.
How am I going to avoid looking like the stay-puft marshmallow man? Oh well, no room for vanity under these circumstances. lol
I can’t believe the hat your daughter found!
here’s one marked down from $2250. 🙂

OH MY! I’ll tell her not to set hers down – it looks very similar!
The nice thing about square dance skirts is that you can wear ANYTHING you want underneath. Have a great time!
