Mixed Up Fashion Lab: Summer Twinset

I promised a Fashion Lab in which I attempt to create new combinations suitable for Spring wearing out of pieces that are normally only worn in one way … drumroll, please … the twinset. After all, Spring is my most challenging season wardrobe-wise.

silk-floral-ruffle-sleeve-blouse-with-sweater-vest.JPG I like all of these except this last one. But, in reality, I just don’t like the ruffled shirt. I’ll tell you what, first person to ask for it gets it. To qualify, you must have left a comment on the new blog. Oh, and I’ll need a little it of money to cover shipping. Say $5?

Usually when people talk about splitting up sets, they are talking about suits. Either way, it’s important to remember to always clean them together.

Did this mixed-up project give you any ideas?

  1. I like the simple and classic looks the best, i.e, the white shirt worn with the vest and cardi. Great ways to change the look up a bit. I have so many twin sets, and that is a great idea! I like simple and classic, because I tend to wear really bold jewelry! (I guess that would make sense since I make it huh??) I think the flower ruffle blouse, in both ways you have pictured, could look cool with some wide leg black pants and some funky shoes!

  2. This was very inspiring. I need to stop being so lazy and go into my closet to mix some things up! I think the last combo could work with a belt or if the vest is more fitted than it looks.

  3. I agree with Elleabelle. I actually have just one twin set, which is like that but in a tomato red. I’ve worn the cardi over a few other things, and I’ve worn the shell by itself with a few skirts or pants, but I never think to wear the shell like a vest over a shirt like you did in the 3rd and 4th pics. I really like the idea of the 3rd one.

I think what I don’t like about the 4th one is that there is pattern on the sleeves and then nothing to balance it by the neck. Also, the flowered sleeves seem so filmy in the picture, and the weight of the shell seems so much heavier, that it just reads funny to me (for some reason with the cardigan it doesn’t seem as strange, maybe because we are used to seeing a heavier cardigan over a thinner layer?)

  4. Um, yeah, what they said!

Last Saturday, I was trying to put together an outfit for church. (See, I listened to what you said!) I tried pairing a white collared shirt with a cardigan just like you did, but it totally made me look like a preppy schoolgirl. Not the somewhat mature imagine I’d like portray! I just discovered, it’s all in the belt! I bet I could make it work if I tried it with a belt like that. Although…with my long hair and “you look so young” face, I might still end up looking like a schoolgirl.

Also, do you find that the shell gets stretched out when you wear it like a vest like that?

  5. Here’s a couple ways to get rid of the schoolgirl look:

    1. Put a cami under the white shirt.
    2. Fold the sweater sleeves back to above-elbow length and wear the shirt sleeves long & buttoned.

Layers are fun and in right now!

Great pix, Rebecca! will get out my twinset.

  6. Hey, now I know what I should have done: My daughter has big, dark brown beads. They would have made that last combination work, maybe I’ll even try it on later today.

Jenna ~ I haven’t worn this combination yet, but the twinset is rather on the big side, so I don’t think it’s going to be any problem.

And I love the preppy schoolgirl look! Although I am not insensitive to what you are saying. I have a couple of friends here in town who are young with several kids and they also have those same thoughts.

Jennifer ~ those are great and EASY tips!

    More later!

  7. Holy Smokes — it’s Friday already!!!

I’m thinking that combination #1will be more striking worn than on the hanger. Depending on the thickness of the twin set fabric, I’d like to see combination number 4 reversed. I think it is great to see an underpinning peek out from behind a wrap or faux wrap. (Plus it can add a sense of security.)

  8. Actually, the funny thing is, Wendy, that when I tried combination #1 on it looked so BAD on me that it didn’t do justice to the potential. That’s not to say it wouldn’t look good on someone else; clearly it’s a cute combination! But on me, it just made me look fat and frumpy.  So I took all the pictures hanging on the hangers.  lol

  9. Wow, I love what you’ve done with the twinset! I’ll probably have to buy some soon for work and I wasn’t looking forward to it, but that was before I knew there’s so much potential! Thanks for the ideas.

  10. I did it! I pulled out my bright pink twinset for a Valentine’s Sunday School party last night and had fun with the layers. My sister saved the day with her collection of white collared shirts (even though I had to drive across town to borrow one). It took me three tries to find one that fit right under the shell. But the resulting outfit was great! Bright pink shell over white button down with dark jeans. A fresh new look without spending a dime! I love it! Thanks for the inspiration, Rebecca!
