Do you have a signature color? Do you wish you did?
Two variables concern the selection of a signature color, although likely most of us just fall into it.
- Our own personal coloring.
brown eyes: consider a red or a pink, or orange or purple depending on skintone.
blue eyes: consider blues, from teal to periwinkle.
green eyes: how about a green, or a yellow or turquoise?
- Our style personality.
From What’s Your Favorite Color?, a condensed list of some common favorite colors:
Functional, aka Sporty: red, green, and camo (he hee).
Romantic (or bohemian): purple.
Timeless classic: navy or yellow, depending on geography.
Glamorous, aka Dramatic: red.
These are just some thoughts to get you started. Alternatively, do you despise the idea of a signature color? Do you want to change it every season? Undoubtedly that is a function of personality. (You trendsetter, you!)
Anybody care to guess mine?
I don’t think I have a signature colour per se. I don’t despise the idea, although for me it might be too easy to get into a rut if I thought I had a “signature” colour.
A sales person told me recently that black is an “important” colour for me, and she was bang on. But I think of it as backdrop for other splashes of colour in accessories, sweaters and blazers moreso than a “signature” colour.
Yeah, I didn’t list black, just as a “think outside the box” kind of thing, although in the style personality post I did put black with a couple of different ones.
To keep from getting stuck in a rut I vary the color from light coral pink to maroon. All the same basic color, but various tints and shades.
But for you, with your sparkly brooches, black would be a perfect back-drop. 🙂
Oddly, I have only one black blazer, and it’s not winter weight. (I live with a grey and white cat.) But I have a multitude of black coats …
I wear black sweaters under my grey wool blazer and my red multitoned blazer, which are my true winter jackets.
I do have a heavy weight black cardigan that I wear as a “substitute blazer”.
I definitely have a signature color. Back when I was working, every single thing in my closet coordinated. I could have layered my dresses and they would have looked good together! LOL!
Since becoming a sahm, I have gone more for cheap than cute and lost my color-coordination. However,as I mentioned on The Duchy of Burgundy Carrots (who recommneded your site), I am getting over that!
Wine! I could never have too many wine-colored shirts (although at the moment I only have three and only two of them fit). It is classic, rich, and feminine — and it looks great on me. Why am I wearing anything else???
Well, Beth, if you can’t drink it, wear it. he hee. Sorry.
Seriously, two would be enough shirts under some circumstances, but DEFINITELY not yours. 😉
Well, I have greenish-blue eyes and my signature colors (and favorite color for that matter) are turquoise and sky blue. So, I think the style book you mentioned is right. Those colors def. flatter my eyes and complexion. I think people develop a signature color when they are complimented repeatedly when they wear it. My husband has olive green eyes and light blue and green (same colors I like) look fabulous on him because they make his eyes glow. He was stuck in a rut for years…always wearing grey, navy and black. So, I am happy that he experiments a bit with color now!
This is interesting. My daughter recently asked me if a certain pair of earrings was my favorite, because I wear them all the time. I do. They are glass–a greenish color with brown flecks, and then have a turquoise stone as well. They are lightweight (which is important for my functional/casual personality), and I like the colors. So, I find myself buying things that go with them, subconsciously, I think.
I don’t have a signature color, but I think I do wear a lot of light green and recently a good bit of brown (which is common these days).
I think I would like those earrings. Are your eyes green or hazel by any chance?
Elleabelle, I bet you guys end up matching quite a bit. 🙂
Cute!
It is funny that you say that…because if he is wearing that color shirt, and I come out “matching” he will change IMMEDIATELY!!! So, although I might think it would be cute, he definitely does not!!!
My signature color is most definately black. Even though I have brown eyes, warm colors such as red, yellow and orange do not work for my skin color (yellowish olive). Black, however, makes me look great.
Welcome to the blog, Sophia. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Are you kind of a glamorous personality who tends to go for a high drama look anyway?
Just a guess. 🙂

I wear the color pink exclusively. All shades but no other color. I have been doing that for 4 years. It’s pretty sweet:)
