In this recent post I announced my personal wardrobe improvement goal for this year:
to fill in my wardrobe of accent tops (basic tee-shirts, dress shirts, etc.)
Now, upon further reflection, I can refine the goal even more, or at least cross off certain considerations. The amended goal would then be:
to fill in my wardrobe of accent tops (basic tee-shirts, dress shirts, etc.) suitable for mountain weather warmer than 50 degrees
The point being that as I considered what I wear for that layer in the current uniform, which is a light-to-medium weight wool or cashmere sweater, I am in reasonably good shape.
My current inventory, from best/newest:
- dark heather gray wool v-neck
- ivory cashmere v-neck
- light heather gray cashmere turtleneck
- light pink cashmere crewneck
- dark brown heather wool turtleneck
dark brown silk thermal crewneckbelongs in leisure- dark heather gray wool turtleneck
And that’s just the casual lifestyle segment. Clearly I need to start looking to replace some darker pieces, but not with alot of urgency.
I admit, though, that the transitional seasons are always a little harder for me. What would you recommend for my spring uniform?
What jumps out at me is that 4 out of 7 tops in your list have a pattern for texture: heather. Much harder to do this in a shirt, say. I can only think of a grey chambray or perhaps a solid color in a matte damask weave pattern, which would give some shading but not any glare and doesn’t give a print feel, even though it is one.
If you want a knit top, there are some very lightweight blends that are flattish boucles that often combine two colors. I have one that I wear 3 seasons and is my favorite top because it blends with so much. A teal green, plum and blue-violet. You could probably find similar in a color plus white.
Your top sounds like a very attractive color combination. You’re right, too, that a color plus white would work for me.
I honestly hadn’t thought of trying to translate a heathery color into a more springy shirt; I wonder if that is part of my trouble? A few years ago, I had a spring wardrobe template that used long-sleeve ribbed cotton sweaters. I liked it then, but I’m not sure now.
One thing I am confident about is that this problem will be solved in the mind, not in the dressing room!

Now, years later with alot more exploration under my belt, I am thinking smallish patterns are a good option. Also color accented by white. And, according to Carol Tuttle’s type thing, heather is a type 1 “expression”. 🙂
