July is Jeans Month

July is jeans month if, like me, you want to get the most for your budget by shopping thrift.  After all, shoppers are working on their summer wardrobes and won’t start really thinking about jeans until August.  (Hey, moms, is this a good time for general back-to-school thrifting too?)  Take the time now to inventory your wardrobe of jeans and begin looking for what you need.  If you don’t find it thrift, you can take advantage of the fall sales around the corner.

So, how many pairs of jeans do you need?  Some of my most glamorous friends have only one, and maybe a back-up pair for laundry day.  On the other hand, if your children are still in the spit-up stage, you may need a drawer full (like my friend from the post How Many Jeans Does One Mom Need).

My needs:

  • straight-leg jeans for with flats (everyday jeans)
  • trouser jeans for with heels  (I got both of these first two thrift this week for a total of $13.25)
  • a pair to tuck into knee boots (I don’t always need these, but I did this past winter!)
  • a back-up pair

In my idiom, all jeans are dark.

Statistically, I’ve heard, most women own 8 – 13 pairs of jeans (and the numbers of pairs owned decreases as the one’s size increases).  True confessions:  How many jeans do you have?  How many do you need?

  1. I have about 15 pr. I picked up another 4 this past month. They are all dark wash, long, with either straight leg or boot cut. I love jeans and wear them all the time.

  2. One. I must be the least jeans-wearing woman on the planet, did not wear jeans of any kind from 40 to 60. Last year I bought a trouser pair, which I wear occasionally. I LOVE jeans on people, just not on me; I wear skirts, mostly.

  3. Wow…I have something like one pair (that needs replacement, as it’s a bit big now), unless you count the pair that’s definitely more denim trouser than “trouser jean,” and the couple reserved for when my professional work takes me someplace dirty (infrequent but necessary). Granted, under different everyday circumstances I’d probably own more and wear them much more of the time, generally on the dressier side.

I can’t imagine thrifting jeans, just because they’re so hard to properly fit even with the full array of retail options.

  4. I currently have three pair, which is probably average for me. I have one trouser jean which are too short so I put them in the drawer for a long time until I discovered I could roll them up and use them as capris. I have a pair of “workhorse” jeans that are about ready for the trash but they still fit nicely. I have a newish pair that I had hemmed so they are the perfect length with my summer sandals. But they are a bit too loose in the hips and thighs (waist fits perfectly) so they look kinda “mom jean” ish. I think I need a different cut in this particular brand.

  5. I am afraid to count. 😉 Not really. Except in the summer jeans are the workhorses of my wardobe.

    — two pairs of black one more trouser cut, one boot
    — one pair of grey bootcut
    — one pair of dark wash straight leg
    — one pair of dark wash boot cut
    — one pair of faded bootcut I can’t quite bring myself to part with
    — one pair of medium blue bootcut

Some are lighter weight than others, too — you can’t wear lighter weight jeans in winter in this climate!

  6. — one black that fit perfectly and that I’m wearing right now. (I was wearing them on the morning of the 4th; but it warmed up so fast, I remembered your temperature experiment and quickly changed into ….)
    — one light weight, elastic waist, loose (is that the “mom jeanish” look?), that I roll up to capris
    — one medium weight, jean capris

I definitely need at least one more long pair of real denium – now that I can fasten them around the middle. (hehehe)

  7. Wendy in England

I have four. Two are these:

    One is this:

Okay, neither of those are ‘budget’ or thrifty. But the M&S ones are particularly good workhorse garments, and worth their weight in gold. I actually like them more than the Monsoon ones.

But right now, my good-a$$ jeans are a pair of M&S black bootcut jeans that I know I saw in-store earlier this season for £25, but I found new with tags at the Cancer Research Charity shop for £7. Perfect fit, very flattering, and definitely the right price!

  8. Well, I am still in the spit-stage and I only own 2 pair of jeans. Does that make me glamorous? What about if I tell you they’re exactly the same style, purchased 4 years ago at Target and terribly unflattering? Not so glamorous 😀 I can’t fathom having 8-13 pair, even in my jeans -wearing, small-bottom-having, days. I don’t think I own 8-13 bottoms, period.

My main problem with jeans, aside from not caring to wear pants much any more (I live in Alabama and pants are hot) is that while I am only 5’8″ I have a ~36 inch inseam- the same as a male friend who is 6’2″. And I have a 38J bust. I suppose a bra that fits is an even bigger pipe-dream than jeans that do.
