Trend Length and Overlap

Quote from denim designer Michelle Siwy:

I think with the way information is processed these days, trends are staying longer and overlapping, which is causing people to just be unique individuals because they are no longer afraid or intimidated to try.

I completely agree. And this is absolutely good news.  Once upon a time there may have been a more defined fashion cycle, but now there is so much information available to everyone. Fashion heroes are less trendsetters than they are just those who have discovered what works for them (their idiom) and are willing to stick to it ruthlessly. I’m not there yet.

What about you? Is there a new look you are a little afraid to try? Alternatively, is there a saturated look to which you feel both drawn and repulsed?

  1. Re: saturated looks that both draw and repel. Funny you should mention it. That’s how I’m feeling about the babydoll look. I remember just a few years ago the bohemian skirt and cowboy boot look. Is that where babydoll dresses are headed?

  2. As far as a look I’m aching to try, but am afraid… it’s the legging. I wouldn’t even be considering it if I were not pregant, but the call of the extra long maternity tunic w/ a pair of leggings is beckoning me. Should I heed the call of the leggings??

  3. I like that quote and I love your conclusions, especially “Fashion heroes are … those who have discovered what works for them.” I’ve found what works for me and pbbbbbbbt! on trends. But I’m rebellious like that anyhow. 😉

  4. The babydoll look: I feel the same way, Jennifer. Realistically, I don’t see how the look can be popular for long, because so many people consider it unflattering. But maybe that’s the appeal: those who can look good in it are more set apart. (I bet it looks good on you.) On the other hand, there is something about the look that people respond to, so finding the right application (maybe sundresses?) without going overboard might be the trick to incorporating it without becoming a fashion victim. It’s a puzzler for sure.

Leggings: what about doing a mid-thigh dress with leggings under? A dress which is technically long enough to be a dress, but might feel a little under dressed without the leggings? I think as long as leggings are worn like tights instead of like pants they are very practical. And the beauty of it is you can test out the look in maternity without it being a huge commitment.

And I do like the above two together. It’ll be interesting to see whether they become a staple or not. Which statement just shows I haven’t yet adapted to the idea of trends sticking around longer and overlapping. I’m working on it, though. 🙂
