Frugal Mom Wears the Fall 2007 Trends

Five Fall trends, based on “Sneak Peak: Autumn 2007” at youlookfab, and how the frugal mom might approach them this shopping season.

  1. Pants: for the sake of longevity, I’m going to suggest wide-legged trousers. Color? Probably grey. Trousers are a great way to wear a color that you may not prefer next to your face and wide-legged has the potential to look chic and classic for years to come.
  2. Puffy: The Civil War Era was all about puffy sleeves. (For Autumn 2007 we are seeing puffy everything.) The purpose of the added volume back then? To make the waist look small by contrast. Tuck that in the back of your mind for consideration, because …
  3. Hourglass: that’s a way almost anybody can achieve an hourglass silhouette. Back then they wore puffy sleeves and huge skirts, along with a normal waist (not so much corsetting). A prediction: be on the lookout for the return of hourglass silhouette coats. I’ll buy one!
  4. Riding boots: Thank you to all my relatives who have contributed to my birthday/riding boot fund. No time for shopping at present. (he he – stealth pun!)
  5. Patent: Black is the classic in patent. Brown is iffy. As an alternative to black, consider a belt or bag in one of the season’s jewel-tones: purple, royal, magenta, etc.

What trend are you hopping on this season?

  1. I’m thrilled to see that hourglass is back (it doesn’t hurt that I’m already a natural hourglass).

I’ve been reading the “Fashions of a Decade” series and my favorites have got to be the 30’s and 40’s. Those were high points in fashion in my opinion — in spite of, or maybe because of, the fact that women had to make do with less and couldn’t afford to chase trends. And what was the predominant silhouette? Hourglass 🙂 It’s still trend proof; and being trend proof is definitely frugal.

  2. Well,, now that you mention it . . . I just bought MAGENTA SHOES! 🙂 I’m going to post about them tomorrow.

And I recently bought burgundy patent flats, which are precious, but they aren’t very comfortable. I was planning to return them and wear the magenta instead, but the two are very different, and I’m wondering if there isn’t room for both in my wardrobe. Hmmmm . . .

  3. OH! I just bought gray wide legged pants. They’re not ultra wide, but they are a nice classic cut that should last for years. I have several pretty cashmere sweaters that I usually pair with black pants, but sometimes I feel like that look is dated. The gray seems to modernize the look a bit. Now I need to get some great shoes.

What do you suggest for shoes with dress pants? I can’t take a very high heel b/c the pants aren’t long enough for my 3-inch-heeled boots. I like boots in the winter b/c they are sooooo practical and warm. But I wonder if funky shoe wouldn’t be a better choice, since as I said, the outfits are pretty plain.

  4. I think a deep coffee brown patent leather would be a gorgeous classic.. 🙂

As for the wide-legged trend, I never even knew, but I was ahead of the curve! I bought a pair a year ago and I brought it on this project and have been wearing it ever since, they feel like pajamas to me…

  5. Well, my trend following is a bit limited since I’m wearing maternity clothes. I will buy a few tops in the jewel tones though. My mom is always getting on to me for wearing too much black and brown, and I have finally seen the light. This pregnancy, unlike others, I really want my clothes to be fitted. Instead of flowing, roomy shirts, I want something that fits all over. The only part of me that is big is my belly and I want to show that off. I’m finding that a bit challenging in the dressy and winter categories though. I’ll just keep looking.

Hey dcrmom–maybe an ankle boot with a lower heel? I love the heeled boots and pant look, so I don’t have much to offer. 🙂

  6. About brown patent: probably somebody very expensive makes a nice one, but the ones I see are typically an ugly color. I would probably go with burgundy or at least a brown in the cordovan (brown/burgundy) family.

dcrmom ~ the gray gives you lots of options. Like nicole suggests, an ankle boot, or your idea of something funky or just something colorful. The burgundy patent would be ideal except … you have room in your wardrobe for shoes that aren’t very comfortable? 😉 I would probably wear my cordovan oxford lace-ups with the small heel.

  8. Love wide leg pants, grey, and purple. Ditto for puffy sleeves. And Peter Pan collars.

I’m thrilled about the hourglass, belted silhouettes, although there’s plenty of retro ’60’s looks too – very straight cuts, shift dresses, that sort of thing. Some of my favorites are the princess-seamed ’60’s-inspired dresses, that hug the body but still give that smooth line. Really, I’m just happy about the return of the dress.

  13. I’m seeing lots of metal… copper, brass, silver, gold. I love all the jewlery out there in base, rough, edgy metal. Lots out there in affordable ranges too, and good accessories go a long way to spice up any wardrobe, even when I’m having an “I feel ginormous” day 🙂
