Fashion Lab: Skinnies and Flats

The thing that cracks me up about asking you guys to send in pictures for fashion labs is how good you look in everything. Makes the lab almost useless! But in a good way. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Take erin is nice, for instance. In the comments on my previous fashion lab about saddlebags and skinny black jeans, she said,

“i agree that those pants are being worn too small, but also the shoes play a part. i experimented with my own skinny jeansโ€“ high heels made the hips more prominent, which surprises me because they are so often said to be slimming. when i put my little canvas flats back on, i looked a lot better”

And kindly sent in pictures. In my opinion, erin looks fabulous in both.

I want to go shopping.

My problem with skinnies is generally in the calves (me in skinny jeans), they just end up fitting like leggings (good thing mine are stretch!). Coming in September: dcrmom tests the Zafu jean finder recommendations.

Thank you, erin, for modeling for us!

  1. i think she looks good in both as well. ๐Ÿ™‚

however, i do think perhaps the heels may be “slimming” in that they provide the illusion of height, a longer leg, and thus, a longer line, which is often perceived to be slimming (proportionately). it may just be the photo (angles, position of individual in relation to the camera itself, etc.) and my own perception, but the heels appear to be more “slimming” in a side by side comparison. what she sees in “real life” (slimming effect of flats) may be more accurate than what the camera might portray.

  2. I like the heels best. Erin looks leggier in them, while the flats call attention to the width of her upper thighs (which are by no means heavy!). I think this lab illustrates why skinny jeans are so tricky. They really need a long line down at the foot to balance to nipped-in ankle. Boots with a heel could work as well as the pump, I think–at least on a tall, lean person like Erin.

  3. Both looks certainly do work on Erin!

Just my personal opinion — when there is more “puddling” at the bottom, the better the look is with a heel.

  4. I think the jeans look great, but need to be complimented equally by the shirt and the shoes. Rebecca, what are going shopping for? Some new skinnies??? I need to get out and do some fall shopping too! The Lord & Taylor near my house has all their fall stuff out already and its making me anxious to go out and spend some money!

  5. In this context I was thinking I need some skinnies that fit a little looser, a little more like hers do; but I also just plain need some fall clothes. I’m afraid I’ve gained a little weight and some of my jeans have shrunk and I just don’t have it right. I’m in the process of doing some serious editing, though, so I don’t want to jump the gun.

Too bad. Since you mention a Lord & Taylor near your house, I know we can’t go shopping together.

  6. What a great series! After 70lbs up and down through 2 pregnancies, skinnies make me look like I’m being sucked down a drain! I do love them with a tunic that covers the bum, though! The model looks great!

  7. i went up a size when i bought these jeans (which are gap red if anyone is wondering) so they would be comfortable.
and about the shirts, i had much better ones picked out– this is crazy– our oak tree has been infested by oak mites which bite people leaving huge itchy welts that last 2 weeks, and i was attacked by them all over my back (they can’t be seen by the naked eye and can go right down your collar). i had to put medicine all over my back, and then couldn’t wear anything i didn’t want to get stained.

  8. That’s terrible! About the oak mites, I mean. I’ve never heard of them. Can you imagine how many kids get those and parents are mystified by what they are?

Thanks again for doing this! It was fun!

  9. JUST A NOTE. SKINNY JEANS ARE NOT FOR FAT WOMEN…MMMKAY. NOW TAKE THOSE OFF AND PUT ON SOME AGE APPROPRIATE CLOTHING, DORK
