Frugal Mom Wears the Spring 2007 Trends

Or does she?

Ever since I saw this post,From Fashion Verbatim: Adrian’s Big in ‘o7 Predictions, the return of Frugal Mom has been on my mind.

Here at the bottom of the fashion food chain, long lists of top trends can be overwhelming. Thanks, Adrian, for cutting it down to 5!

  • The Manipulated Waist

Yes, creative Frugal Mom will do every variation of belting: high for the empire waist look, at the waist with various beltings, or dropped. Get out your toys and play!

  • The New Harem

Uh, yeah. I was a senior in high school the last time this silhouette came around. For what it’s worth, here’s my two-cents:

  1. If you love this look and have been wearing it since 1980, DON’T CHANGE NOW!
  2. If you are currently all about boot-cut, keep your pant wardrobe very lean. Change is coming.
  3. If you are daring, innovative, and love this look – go for it! Thrifting should net you some real scores.
  4. The rest of us? Let’s just wait.
  • The Colour Yellow

Yellow. You either love it or hate it, right? So if you are blonde, live in Texas, or otherwise want to hop on this trend see How to wear yellow at youlookfab for how to work it into your wardrobe.

My advice? If yellow isn’t a staple for you, buy a t-shirt.

  • Shining Bright

If you want to wear metallics this spring (such as these: Metallics, via the trend report at Frugal-Fashionista), pieces that can be used for evening in the future, like shoes or dresses, will give the greatest bang for the buck.

On a related note: patent leather is classic for spring, and also looks wonderful for holiday evening-wear.

  • Geometric Prints

The Riveting Question I’ve been asking my RLFs:

If you were a print, what print would you be?

I’m paisley. Sorry Adrian.

  1. I can see the importance of manipulating the waist-and that is something I might actually think about when buying things. As far as prints, yellows, metallics, and m.c. hammer pants (I’m sorry, I’m sorry-but those fluffy pants that taper will always be m.c. hammer pants to me)……well I’ll just stick to belts. Baby steps. 😀

  2. It’s just so weird… my high school fashion flashback. I *loved* yellow back in the late 80s. and I look good in it, so I guess I’ll jump on the bandwagon. I use it as a brighter version of tan. 🙂 And I just bought a yellow purse at Goodwill–I’d say $4 is a fine price for the latest trends. 🙂

Still wondering if I should spring for the yellow patent wedge sandals. For $62, will I still wear them 2-3 years from now? I might, because as I said, I wore tons of yellow in the 80s. I even had yellow shoes which I wore all the time. What’s your cost-per-year or per-wear for new shoes, Rebecca? Or, if you were paying $62 for a pair of shoes, how long would you expect them to last, both fashion-ally and functionally?

    Here are the shoes–http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/23382626/c/10159.html

I wish there were a way to tell how long trends would last…..

  3. Mrs Lady ~ That works! 🙂

Jennifer ~ I really like those shoes!!! The way you describe your use of yellow, I don’t think it will be any problem for you to still wear them in 2 or 3 years (or even more).

Based on my figures for my Chacos, I think a realistic cost per wear for new shoes is about 25 – 40 cents. My blue everyday winter shoes I paid $65 for.

Alot depends on how often you wear them and how many pairs you have. I like to let my shoes rest in between wears whenever possible. Replacing everyday shoes every two or three years enables me to have more than one pair and most of the time still wear them out before they go out of style.

The trick with the yellow wedges would be if they were comfortable enough to wear every day or every other day. My opinion? Go for it!

I think trend-predicting is becoming more and more difficult, because there is so much information out there. As soon as I say yellow is usually a short-lived trend, this one will last 10 years! So it’s best to pick your trends by what works for you and it seems like, for you, yellow is a go. (I assume you mean bright yellow; with my coloring, if I do yellow at all it’s a soft, butter yellow.)

  4. I’m buying myself a pair of bright yellow harem pants RIGHT NOW! Actually, I shuddered when I read that yellow was fashionable – because it looks awful on me – but then it occurred to me to buy a pair of yellow wedge sandals. THAT would be cute!

  6. Y’know, Beck, I suspect the shudder has something to do with the quality of light in the north. Around here, many, if not most, people feel the same way you and I do. But when I wrote my style personality quizilla, I got in trouble with my friend in TX for not including yellow or peach as an option for favorite color.

  7. OK, starting the Yellow Shoe Fund right now! Maybe we can skip eating for a few days. 🙂 Your idea of “cost per wear” is helping me with the impulse buys (which for me, tend to be at the thrift store, but still they add up)!

  8. I would be a retro floral print. Probably with multi-colored flowers on brown because I’m romantic and innovative. 🙂

  9. like your pattern question. I would definitely be a very large black and white houndstooth – bold and direct, intense and with an expected and consistent twist.

I love yellow! Whether I should or not. I just pulled out a silky thin knit oversized saturated yellow vest and wore it with a new leaf green shirt – I’m craving green – and eggplant pants. I normally would never, ever wear green and yellow but these 2 exact shades worked for me. I got rid of all my vests, too, of every kind but this one looks fine with a shirt peeking out from under.

  10. Add me to the “no yellow” crowd. I might be able to pull off a pale yellow mixed in with something else-but a strong yellow tends to make me look sallow. I could probably pull something off in a skirt or something. . ..

  11. Vildy ~ what’s funny about that is that when I bought my brocade converse the other pattern available was – you! lol

Jenn ~ I bet you’d look great for spring in a black or black/white top with a black/white/yellow skirt. But why force it? It’s more frugal to just say no.

  12. I’m kind of liking the yellow! Can’t say I’ve tried on the bright shades out there now, but it could be fun. I’m loving the idea of a black, white, and yellow skirt! Sign me up for that one!

As far as what print? I love this! I think I’d be a big all-over floral. Nothing cutesy, but definitely feminine. Fun question!

  13. I have a drop waist printed skirt with a bright yellow in it, and a pair of sandals with hot colours … yellow/fushia/orange and white soles (they sound loud, but the straps are skinny and they go perfectly with the skirt). So there’s my yellow.

I would add to the sparkle suggestions metallic coloured handbags (I like the muted metallics myself) — they also go day to evening.

    I’m a Pucci print. Definitely!

  14. Jenna ~ is yellow popular where you are, as in other areas of the south?

Wendy ~ your yellow sounds extremely wearable. And I totally agree with you about bags.

Thanks to both of you for answering the print question! What fun!

  15. Hmm…Is yellow popular… Not that I’m aware of. I don’t live in a “southern belle,” “deep south” kind of area though. We have such a diverse cross section of people that really anything goes.
