Script analysis is roughly analogous to lifestyle analysis. When analyzing the script, I’m looking for things like how many days are actually covered within the course of the show and how often does it make sense for the character to change clothes, producing a chart by scene and character for costume needs . When analyzing my schedule, I create a pie chart (real or imaginary) by lifestyle segment. For each lifestyle segment I will design a template.
In analyzing the script, the designer and director need to be on the lookout for the complication known as the quick change. Sometimes the character needs to appear in other costume when there really is no time for the actor to change. Possible strategies include doubles and dressers, but I always try to employ design first. IRL, we don’t get dressers or doubles.
Are there circumstances in your life where you need to be instantly changed? Or just something that makes being appropriately dressed a little more complicated? While it is not maybe technically a quick change, going straight from the gym to errands, or errands to the gym, four or five days a week is a major wardrobe consideration.
This summer, I have already decided I am choosing the dress for my every day. The dress and flats. Easy to change in and out of, easy to try on clothes, cool and presentable anywhere.
If I stop at the grocery store, however, I really will need quick change. Have you noticed how cold grocery stores are kept?
