I think I am obsessed with color theory. And I am only just beginning to realize all that I do not understand about it. Expect lots of color commentary to come, and probably some rewrites of old material.
While not strictly a color topic, sheen is certainly related. It is a major component to a person’s appearance that sometimes gets overlooked.
I don’t have alot of rules to add here, just a question for us all to consider:
Is your visual appearance more shiny or matte?
When I was younger, my skin was very reflective. Now that it is slightly more “textured”, my hair – the most eye-catching element of my appearance – is extremely shiny. It seems fair to say that “shiny” is a fixed component of my best look. I am moving to all shiny metals in my accessories to support that element of my appearance (can I say “beauty” when talking about myself?).
And a tip: if it is hard for you, as for me, to find belts with the right color hardware, check men’s. Save up to 60% on men’s apparel at NORDSTROM.
And a thought: 2014 may be the year when I finally give in and officially learn color analysis. If I can afford it. 😉
This is an area that interest me, as well. When I was young, I was once told that when I woke up, I looked like a knish, with a film of oil on my face. Otherwise, though, we all wore foundation to school and a lucky thing, too, because we lived in the semi-desert. I was not to hear about sunblock until I was in my mid twenties. I did wear Max Factor Ultra Lucent – be still my heart – a wonderful foundation probably designed for older women but with a great glow and dewiness.
I still had some left – how old could it have been – when I was pregnant at 38. My physician, no slouch as he taught doctors, complimented me on my glowing skin. Actually, it was the last bits of the makeup because without it I looked positively greenish. I wore it not to scare him. 😀
I since don’t wear foundation because I can’t find any substitute that I like and I don’t wear sunblock. I go old fashioned with a hat and not being so stupid as to stand out in the strong sun when I don’t have to.
But, yes, less glowy now and I have been noticing that I am looking best in more matte fabric finishes or sweatery, furry, velvety ones. I always say to myself that I need to stick to sheen and not shine. Strong shine now overpowers me, though I can’t say I wore much of it in my youth. My eyes sparkle and I try to pick that up with little details in clothing, whether buttons or my persistence is wearing lip gloss or the dread frosted lipstick. Suits me! Sometimes earrings when I can stand to wear them. So I like some glint along with my sheen. Oddly, I always have trouble with pearls. I have one faux pearl necklace that has
irregular pearls mixed with little bits of blackened chain and tiny warm tone beads and tiny glinting “diamonds.” Make of all this what you will. 😀
Interesting. I would say I’m definitely more matte–curly hair and dry skin will do that, I suppose. I’ve always had mostly shiny jewelry, but lately I’ve added a few duller pieces and I find myself pulling them out over and over.
