What colors do you remember liking as a child? Honestly, that may provide a better assessment of colors to wear than color draping. Who among us has not been falsely typed by a color consultant?

Here I am, on the left, as a child. I do not remember that outfit, at all. I vaguely remember my mom’s glamorous dress (she looks stunning in all photos from the 60s and 70s). What strikes me about this is that I would absolutely wear that pink and white color combo now and my sister wears red. But the main color that I remember preferring as a child was orange. And I really liked orange and pink together. Still do.
What these colors may say about our personalities:
RED – This is the color of extroversion, of a person with desire, appetite, a will to live life fully. You are somewhat aggressive, impulsive, perhaps athletic, surely quick to release your feelings and emotions. You have many ups and downs in your feelings.
To you, life is meant to be happy, and when it isn’t, you are confused and upset. You hate monotony, are quick to judge people, quick to form opinions and boldly express them.
ORANGE – Generally you are good-natured, likable and social, you make friends easily, with an easy smile and a talent for small talk.
Chances are better than even that you will not marry, and if you do, your marriage will be one of light affection. You prefer friendliness and companionship to adoration. A natural born politician, you shine at any occupation in which you meet groups of people. You seldom indulge in serious thought or severe discipline.
PINK – Two types of people like pink – the person who has led a very sheltered life and the person who, grown older, seeks to regain the innocence of childhood. In pink there is affection, delicacy and an inner conviction, often naive, that life should be a gentle affair devoid of trials and tribulations.
Younger people who like pink sometimes hold to the illusion that life should be constantly romantic and generous. Pink is a gentle form of red , and somewhat vain – commmonly preferred among woman in the upper or middle class.
Or it could just be that we somehow intuitively like the colors that look good on us. Which beings me back to my point: I am doing an inventory of my early color preferences. Are the colors you wear now the same ones you favored as a child?
Your mother does look wonderful! I’ve been playing around with recalling favorite clothes and their features from the past, with a focus on childhood, girlhood. What shocked me, since I have such an interest in clothing, is that I can recall childhood memories literally from the crib but I have almost no recollection of the clothing I wore. And I went to nursery school. So that’s a lot of daily outfits that I’m blank on. Seems to me clothing was once not very important to me. Though I can recall with crystal clarity the various items I spotted in a store shopping with my mother and was refused them. Princess Summerfallwinterspring – why can’t *I* have white leather moccasins with a colored beaded design.
The only color I loved for sure, since toddlerhood, was black, preferably a velvety dark black.
Not allowed. 😀 Still love black, wear it and it looks great on me. I do remember seeing one day a small parade of little girls dressed for their first communion in frothy white dresses.
I do like white and wear it well but I was so frustrated that I could not have a dress like that. (not Catholic) I couldn’t understand why I couldn’t have the dress. No one willing to explain to me, anyway, the purpose of the dress. Just looked like a special club to me. Can’t say if I responded to the alien sight of an all white dress or if the style appealed to me and they looked like princesses.
Ahh – fascinating post! And reminds me of this one from another blogger this week. http://into-mind.com/2013/12/22/soul-searching-advent-calendar-round-up-iii/ (Day 17, Style Evolution).
My favorite in my memory was a turquoise blue velour shirt. I loved the texture and the color. Another favorite memory was a super deep red velvet dress. I glowed in that dress, and dark red is still one of my best colors. (Turquoise isn’t half bad either).
My favorite color was usually blue as a child (still is green or blue). And yes, it looks good on me too – I still wear either blue or red just about every day.
I talked to my sister last night on the phone and she commented too on the colors we are wearing in this picture. She said she would wear that outfit! But we both don’t remember choosing the outfits, so it is a bit curious.
I have never really liked red. In high school, I borrowed a tomato red sweater from a friend and it turned out to be a good color, just one I had never thought to wear before. I also wonder how much of the preferences we have/had is connected to the time in history. When, in about 5th grade, I was allowed to start choosing some of my clothes, I had some of the coolest giant-legged hiphuggers: forest green, bright yellow, lime green. Hmmm.
