In the past, it’s made sense to me to employ the following transitional template:
new jeans + summer top + winter layering piece
“Winter layering piece”= jacket, sweater or sweatshirt.
I’m only tweaking it. For sure, this is a timeless formula. But I am also warming up to the scarf as layering piece for warmth. Since I have a half-sleeve (short, three-quarter, or roll-up) cotton top in almost every dark color I like to wear, I plan to use the following template for Fall 2009, at least in the leisure lifestyle segment:
dark jeans + dark half-sleeve cotton top + scarf
Thinking through the top colors I have and determining what color scarves I still need is my next step, along with switching over the closet and some biffing.
Which of the four lifestyle segments (leisure, casual, business or social) are you currently working on and what will you be wearing this fall? Assuming, of course, that you’re like me and the wardrobe is a constant work in progress. 🙂
I like scarves. My daughter is the best at finding great deals on the really long ones so I can wear them by folding in half and then drawing both ends through the loop created after I place it around my neck. You can bunch them up a bit “creatively” that way 🙂
I didn’t use to like scarves at all but about two years ago I discoved the longer indian style ones that can be used as head coverings and I absolutely love them. They are a nice size to also wrap around your shoulders when you get a bit chilled!
Have a blessed day!

Thanks Sallie! I confess, anything accessory I warm up slowly too. I’m thinking about trying to make some scarves, though, no fitting necessary: it seems like it should be simple enough. But, since not very many people ever talk about making scarves, there must be something that makes it challenging.
Thinking in terms of transitions is so smart. I do this a lot, too. That’s one of the reasons why I invested in layering pieces like blazers or moto jackets or vests that will add a bit more warmth to a summer top, particularly if it’s paired with jeans and boots and/or a scarf. (Actually, I’ve become quite a scarf addict.) It’s fun to know that you do this too!
