I’m reading this lovely little book on home decorating and came across the following statements by author Sharon Hanby-Robie:
“My personal color theory is that the world is divided into two kinds of people – people who prefer green tones and people who prefer blue tones.
A green person, of whom I am one, can be irritated by certain colors of blue.”
That last statement was diagnostic for me: while I like some blues – aqua, periwinkle, and even navy – there are blues, particularly some used in interiors, that irritate me. And it’s nothing personal against anybody who prefers blue.
Totally aside from what colors look good on you, thinking mainly in terms of environment, would you consider yourself a blue person or a green person?
That’s a difficult question Rebecca – for interiors, I’d probably go green over blue, as blue can be too cold and uncomfortable in some environments. Even though I have cool colouring and love blues in general, I tend to prefer the look of interiors that have warmer colours. Periwinkle blue is an exception for me in the interiors spectrum, where I think it can look great, or Agapanthus blue which is more purple (warmed up) is also an interior/exterior favourite.]]
So what does this say about me as a person?
I was going to say green, because I like the majority of those better than the majority of baby blues that tend to plague interiors. Then I remembered that I convinced my mother to paint her kitchen blue and picked out the paint. Then, the blankets piled on my bed are three shades of blue and green. I’m still going to say I’m in the “blue” camp because the shades of green that I like tend to be bluish anyway.
*chuckle* I was wondering about that too, Imogen. The author of the book didn’t really make any connections to personality characteristics or anything. She did say she had tested her theory scientifically for 30 years (just that people divide into the two groups). And I tend to agree with her, if for no other reason than the stories my husband (a green person) has of his disagreements with his mom (a blue person) over what he should wear when he was growing up.
It is a difficult question, because both green and blue are such great colors. Lots of people would say their two top colors are blue and green.
I refuse to choose — every room except my bedroom is done in both blue AND green. There are shades of both that I loathe, but blues and greens with a strong yellow base make me happy when combined.
I’m definitely green. Every room in my house has green and most of my outfits have green and the only blue anywhere is in my jeans.
For fashion, neither — ugh — have absolutely nothing blue in my wardrobe, *shudder* — but do have one spring green + yellow tiny plaid skirt that I wear for Easter with a pink twin-set — it’s my “Easter Bunny” outfit . . .
for home interior, my husband and I agree on green as an accent — in every room — but again, absolutely NO blue . . . . the only blue we like (love actually) is the blue sky and azure sea . . .
how fun to hear others are divided too!
I’m with drwende. I love both blue and green and use them both liberally thoughout the house. That home dec lady of yours would have a field day in our house.
Our main accent color is a deep cranberry color. It’s all through the house. I’m someone who likes neutral walls and trim with a punch. I’ve got hunter trim in the upstairs hall, cranberry trim in the kitchen and family rooms and a funky dark Martha Stewart sage green trim in my daughter’s room to go with her Pepto pink walls. (It sound awful, but really, it works – all of it.) And our couch is navy.
I did a French country blue in the bathroom of our old house and had a green accent wallpaper border in the main living area.
My mom always told me I was one in a million. ; ) lol
Oh, but wardrobe wise, I find it easier to wear blue and have few green pieces.
I ‘m a classic green! I like blue but in very specific shades and not inside… and don’t even get me started an the combination of blue and geese! Ahhhh!
Since what I really like is wood and other brown tones, green usually feels most comfortable with them – to me. Guess I pick green. Excuse me while I go put up plate rails to display our collection of blue plates…. Mmmmm????.
Seriously, neither. I started out as a blue house person, just as accents, but I find both blue and green irritating. I go for red now; lovely warm colours for my house.
She obviously wants the world to divide that way,
Really, this kind of thinking irritates me.
I like both… I have blue in the bedroom and bathroom, green in the kitchen and dining room.
You know, I think I am both a blue AND green person. Blue has been a more consistent favorite color – for years I didn’t like green AND thought it looked bad on me (I was wrong.)
In terms of what I wear, I usually prefer all hues of green or bright blue tones when I’m feeling (or trying to feel) energetic. I always go for more subdued blues (robin’s egg, sky blue, navy) when I’m introspective or relaxed.
Funny enough, my current decorating scheme is BRIGHT fuschia, orange, and gold bedspread and curtains with pale yellow walls. Nary a blue or green in sight. I have so little natural light that blue or green hues look too gray and dull inside.
Hmmm, I like both blue and green for both wardrobe and home decor.
OK, that is funny. I am so a green person. Blues irritate me too, although there are some (like you) that I can stand… the rich colors– turquoise I love, navy I like… but some of the cornflower blues of the 80s I could never see again and be just fine. 🙂
