Help! Karen says I need a sassier flat shoe. I have spent literally hours looking, both in town and online. If you lovely readers can find something suitable, I am willing to spend birthday $$ on it. And, frugal as I am, I don’t mind spending real money on shoes.
My criteria:
- I have to be able to walk three miles at a quick clip in them. (My ballet flats and Converse are only good for about two.)
- No black, no white. Preferably cordovan or burgundy brown, chocolate brown, pewter or other dark grey, possibly navy. In other words, a non-black dark of the same value as my darkest jeans.
- Tailored styling. Nothing romantic: no mary janes, no round toes.
- No elf shoes (no pointed or turned-up toes).
- I need to be able to wear socks with them. Wool or bamboo socks.
- Generally speaking, a shoe needs to be a lace-up to stay on my foot.
There you have it. And, who knows? Maybe there’s something out there that doesn’t quite meet every point, but would nevertheless be perfect. But, I’m beginning to suspect I’m just going straight to flat boots this year. Which would have been fine yesterday, but since I never left the house my feet were very happy in my old black “bowling style” flats.
So leave me a link in comments. I can’t wait to see what you find!
Go over to http://www.zappos.com and look for the Beautifeel brand, a shoe called Citrine in Brown Ice Patent. I would love to wear this pair of flats but my slacks are all too long for flats. I bought a pair of Beautifeel pumps for my trip to Paris and Prague and they are the most beautiful and comfortable shoes I have ever owned. I wear them all day, every day to work. Yes, they are costly, but I figured better one wonderful pair than a couple or more of not as wonderful pair that I didn’t love and couldn’t really wear all day long. I have on my wish list,Clark’s Apple Snow in Dark Brown….

How did you know what size to get in the Beautifeel shoes? I normally wear either an 8 1/2 or 9.
I do like the Clark’s too.
Thanks for the help! =D
I honestly don’t remember. I own the Rosaline and in a size 40 and I normally wear an 8 1/2. I probably ordered them knowing I could return them to Zappos if they didn’t fit. In Dansko I wear a 40 also but in Born I wear 40.5 (but both those shoes are clogs). I went to http://www.beautifeel.com but didn’t see a size conversion chart, but I didn’t spend a long time there. I also usually read the comments made by other wearers at Zappos and that helps me decide whether to try a size other than 40. I have just learned that some European sized shoes I can’t wear due to my foot shape (Ecco, for example)…but that’s the beauty of Zappos as you well know.

Rebecca, I’ve made you a polyvore set of shoes to look at; How can I email you? Karen
Okay, think I got the set emailed to you. These Sketchers are along your lines, with laces, though I threw in one or two without laces that I thought were great. Did you see the brown bowling style? It’s like your blue pair, but hipper! Younger! Sassier! I like the idea of brown for you; it will still give you that leg length you like from your jeans on down, but I like brown better with your hair, eye color, skin, eyeglasses (sooooo great on you!), and the CLOTHES I ‘ve seen on you throughout your posts.
Sketchers are very comfortable, up to the minute stylish, sporty and best of all, affordable. You may even find similar styles at Famous Footwear, DSW and other discount shoe places like Payless Shoes. The selection online can’t be beat though. If you click the Polyvore set, it will show you the price details from Sketchers.com.
Good luck!
Thanks Karen! 🙂
What about Privo? They have a lot of cycling-shoe type styles right now. They’re not all mary janes either.
I haven’t found the perfect shoe yet. I like my clunky comfort shoes and my sleeker shoes, and I haven’t found them combined in one yet! Maybe if you could turn a dial and the shoe would narrow and widen….
My favorite comfort shoe is Keen though. Not tailored but you could definitely walk 3 miles.
Maybe you could just keep walking shoes in the trunk and change for the walk….
Jennifer, I have been noticing Privo recently, but I haven’t explored their offerings completely. That’s a great suggestion. I also think I need to go visit Nordstrom in person. In my painting class there is an older lady sporting some pimpin’ Pumas she bought there last year. (Sorry for the off-color descriptor!)
So basically what ends up happening is I wear “walking shoes” around the house, but these are my normal clothes. So I take a picture. And post it. Because this is what I’m wearing. Then somebody doesn’t like my shoes, so I get all freaked out about finding some cuter, sassier, or more pimpin’ shoes. But when I go out, I wear my flat boots, which are awesome. So my problems are all in my head! lol
But I’m loving all the suggestions! And I do have birthday money. 🙂
Go to Zappos, search Arche. Don’t freak about the price, you want to walk 3 miles and look good, right? You can wash the nubuck models.
So Rebecca, you wear shoes at home? Do others of you do that?
I’m just wondering… I wear house shoes in the house, such as slippers or flip-flops (a designated pair which never goes out of the house), and take off outdoor shoes immediately. I also have outdoor shoes by most doors that I can slip on quickly for going in the yard or checking the mail.
But if I were wearing slippers I would change into shoes before taking a picture of myself. 🙂
Duchesse, thanks for the suggestion! There are a ton of things I never knew existed!
Jennifer, yes, I do. In fact, until I put shoes on, I don’t feel dressed (and thus don’t feel like doing any work). Perhaps I’ll pose the question to everybody. I’m sure I’m not alone, but increasingly I am sure I’m outnumbered. 😉
Totally barefoot here (once I am home from work)…but it is still 80plus degrees here and I think weather has much to do with our “shoe” habits and many of our clothes habits. I have a bad back and used to think I needed to wear shoes all the time, but the most recent research I read on that is that barefoot is good as long as you are not on cement, etc…
