Fashion Lab On Location: Blending vs Contrasting Shoes

What a wonderful surprise! Taking a surprise day of vacation, my hero agreed to accompany me to the Nordstrom rack to look for shoes and take pictures on location. He even bought coffee.  🙂

More about my fall wardrobe needs later, but I should mention that foremost on my mind today was needing walking shoes.  Over the last week or two, I’ve been very disciplined to get out and walk nearly every day and I’m noticing the strength in my back returning (some of you may remember I experienced a very serious back injury this past January).  Lately I’ve been wearing sandals, but that won’t continue forever …

imgp5593.JPGThe first picture is from my before pictures post. Noting that my legs are shorter than my torso, Imogen suggested a shoe that blends with the color of my trousers.  Which I don’t dispute.  However, shopping being the experience that it is, having a wardrobe full of the right things is often easier said than done. Grumble.  Out of the three pictured, plus several others, nothing better than my old blue ones materialized.

But all was not lost!  I have tried, with no real success, several trenches during the run of this blog.  Do you like this one?  (Unfortunately, the picture of the front was no good.  But the look on my daughter’s face when I tried it on for her was very promising.  The collar is wide, with softened points which my husband says go with the lines of my face.  Not the lines in my face.  LOL)

imgp5590.JPGAnd is this the kind of hair cut y’all were thinking? This lady was as kind as could be to allow me to take her picture. And so pretty! Most interesting, though, was her story: she just recently cut her hair and is really loving it. Before that, all she was able to do with it was wear it in ponytail!

Anyway, keep leaving me your input and suggestions.  And keep us posted on what you’re up to.  Remember, this week we are talking about weight loss and physical fitness.  How’s that fitting into your life?

  1. I’m loving the trench coat pic from the back! It looks great – and a good colour too.

That haircut is lovely too – simple and pretty yet modern.

You’re doing really well Rebecca with your mission.

  2. Another thumbs up for the color of that coat and that woman’s haircut. Where were you shoe shopping? I like the second pair (the brown ones). Also, I have to say that the pair of legs in the mirror in the first shoe store pic really weirded me out for the second before I realized that must be the person taking the picture…

I’m loving this series and reading everyone’s ideas. I’ve always been oddly fascinated by personal milestones (and…I turned 29 a week ago, so my head is in a few of the same places when considering the year ahead) so I’m watching with interest.

  3. I think the brown shoes are the best (they are the color of your former hair!). And I can’t wait to see the trench from the front (did you buy it?).

  4. The short haircut is very flattering and I could see that looking good on you too.

As far as fitness… our new plan is homeschool fitness this year. Rather than pouring time and $$ into organized sports, we will all (4 kids and me, but mainly the teen boys) exercise together and train for (hopefully) a 10K, a duathlon (maybe not me on that one), and a run/bike/kayak triathlon in the summer. (I may just do one leg!)

I am loving getting out with my kids… still working out the practical bits to make it happen, as in addition to the teen boys I have 9yo and 3yo girls.

  6. Thanks for the input, Jean! And thanks for bringing up the lipstick thing. I have never liked lipstick, and my husband detests red lipstick, so I don’t have to make that adjustment – just need to find a lipstick that works. My skin is so fair it doesn’t take much to look just hokey on me.

That one makeover in the book, and on his website, with the woman who went from the almost black lipstick to the neutral pink was stunning, wasn’t it? She looked scary in the before picture, but she could have been a model or super-star in the after pics!
