  1. So many of these are tremendously unflattering, even on very slim models. The taupe one on top gathers under the model’s rear, drawing attention to the upper thighs–and the turquoise one on the bottom would make anyone’s belly look pudgy, at least while buttoned that way.

I had a brown merino cardigan in the mid-90s that was cut just like the slouchy ivory one. Wear them again? Heavens, no!

  2. Agreed. Some of them remind me of oversized cardigans from the 90’s – basically a button-up version of the varsity sweatshirt – some look like short versions of the dusters that were everywhere in 2000-01, and the rest are shown in the wrong size for the model. Except for the one with the striped arm bands, and that one I just don’t get.

  3. That was the one I thought I’d get! 😉

Truthfully, the teenagers and young moms are all over this one and somehow they manage to make it look good. I will probably sit it out.

  4. These seem a bit frumpy, and a good example of trends that are very “of the moment” but not flattering at all. They may be comfie, but sort of look sloppy . . . perhaps a longer one, buttoned up and belted as a sweater dress maybe?

  5. big baggy cardigans aren’t flattering for anyone, but longer line cardigans that are shaped through the waist can be really flattering on someone who has a short body and longer legs, just remember:

if there is a belt, take it off and don’t wear it, cut off the belt hooks

Avoid pockets at the hips unless you are very slim through the hips as they draw attention and make the area appear wider.

If you are more curvaceous, look for cardigans in finer wools rather than chunky knits.

  6. This is very interesting. Check out the discussion at youlookfab concerning the same look: http://www.youlookfab.com/2008/06/26/the-%e2%80%9cboyfriend%e2%80%9d-cardigan/

Ellem – I love a sweater dress, but I’m not certain they love me. 😉

The longer, duster style cardigans probably work for some people, but I think they tend to look frumpy, especially on anyone carrying any extra weight. Observing a young couple at the grocery the other evening, I thought perhaps the trendy young man was shopping with his mother, but then decided it was his wife and she was probably packing some extra baby weight around still. It was the knee-length black cardigan and her hair that gave the initial impression of maturity.
