Are Skinny Tanks on the Way Out?

I say yes.  And so does my stylishly innovative daughter.

Honestly, I have not worn one at all this summer.  She hasn’t either, except in cute layering combinations.

What’s replacing them?  Sleeveless tees.  The kind you can wear with a normal “undergarment”.  And this summer I’ve been wearing alot of short-sleeved, button-front white shirts.

Last September was all kinds of fun around here when I said v-necks were out (which statement I stand by), so let ’em fly.  Clearly, we’re keeping our tanks for layering under sweaters this winter, but do you still want to wear them as a top?

  1. Bah! Happy to see them go. They have never been other than a layering piece (read, undergarment!) in my own wardrobe, and I’ll be pleased to see an end to others’ visible bra straps and whatnot. Hmm . . . a thought: it might be time to stock up on pretty colors of tanks, in case they’re not so readily available by next summer.

  2. I’d only ever wear then as undergarments – something to make my v-necks less revealing. But I do love them for that purpose. Plus I like how they smooth me out a bit under my clothes.

  3. They’re undergarments only. I hardly see anyone wearing them on their own as tops anymore. I wear them all the time with my flattering, stylish v-neck tops 😛 *grins cheekily*

  4. Never wore skinny tanks… with my height, the proportions on “skinny” aimed at women of 5’5″ always make me look odd.

I do wear V-necks, but my tops are so deliberately neutral that I doubt anyone could tell you what’s going on with my neckline. The nice thing about being able to wear black is that you can get away with things in that color that will never work in a color-color. I wonder — does this effect work in the most neutral “neutral” for other coloring types, or is it a result of how we as a society interpret black clothes?

  5. Eddie Bauer is having a big summer clearance sale. Their stuff is certainly quality and comes in some very pretty colors. And, of course, Aeropostale. We love their camis.

drwende, that’s a good question. I think there is something unique about how we view black clothes. Off the top of my head, the only other color that comes close would be white. Oh, and maybe army green, which is in a class of it’s own as well. 🙂

  6. I never wore them either, except for layering. Even then though, I have to be careful on length so as to not end up with a stripe right at the widest part of my hips.

I mostly choose these for modesty purposes anyway.

  7. The reason you can get away with wearing black clothes all tthe time is that because they are dark they recede and we don’t notice them, like we would a colour, or lighter neutral.

You can wear any dark neutral (think dark denim), browns, deep olives, charcoal, french navy and it will have the same effect.

THe problem with black is that is’t flattering to most complexions. It just throws shadow into your wrinkles, creates double chins and under eye bags. It suits only a small portion of the population, whilst there is always another dark neutral that will be flattering to you. I’ve written an article on The Black Myth if you ‘d like to read it http://www.bespokeimage.com.au/myth-black-pants.php it may surprise you.

As for necklines, what suits your is dependent on things like your shoulders, decolletage, chin shape, neck length and width, bust size.

  9. They are one of my main staples, however I strictly use them for layering purposes. I would never wear one by it’s self. Beautiful, it would not be. I hope they never go out as far as layering. I would have an entire dresser drawer full to find something to do with. Actually, even if they go out, I don’t think I could bear to part with them. I big puffy heart my skinny tanks.
