With food prices sky-rocketing, is anyone else seriously considering losing weight as a way to save money? Well, before you turn to such drastic measures, turn to Jenn at Frugal Upstate for frugal food options. All month she is running a frugal food feature on Mondays.
My entry: Italian Pizza. Actually, any homemade pizza, but Italian Pizza is much simpler than what we are used to. The one pictured is just bread dough made with the bread machine, a little bit of spaghetti sauce, some random cheese that I happened to have, and arugula. Yes, that’s right, I said, “arugula”. That is the one salad-like pizza topping I found on the authentic pizza we ate in Italy.
To transform an Italian pizza into an American pizza of the Pizza Hut variety: top Italian pizza with salad, and deep fry. Enjoy! 😉
Thanks so much for taking a post off from fashion and participating in the frugal food series! We like to make homemade pizza here (actually had it tonight) and I tend to use a lot less cheese etc than the storebought. Much healthier and cheaper that way.
That looks so good! I love arugula too.
Every Friday around here is homemade pizza night. Low fat cheese, the toppings of my choice — I used to make the dough myself, but the pasta place around the corner makes beautiful fresh dough (choice of whole wheat or white), so I splurge on that! 😉
It’s funny that you would mention losing weight as a way to save money… because the reason why the weight loss industry exists is that it makes money off of people trying to lose weight. But I understand the sort of weight loss you’re referring to – buying less food, especially junks or snacks that are empty calories. 🙂
I know what you mean. Related: isn’t it astonishing to go into a “health food store”? Some of them contain no food whatsoever!
I admit I am not as sensitive as I should be concerning people’s struggles with weight, but I often wonder how anybody can afford to eat enough to maintain three or four hundred pounds.
I guess I was just following the thought train that pops into my head: If I lost 10 or 15 pounds, even if I ate the same things, I should need 10% less of them, thereby enabling me to trim my food budget by 10%. Seems logical, doesn’t it? 😉
