Wedding Gifts

Recently received via email:

What do you get for the bride taking the plunge in today’s flailing economy? Brides are less consumed with blenders and toasters, and more concerned with cash. Brides-to-be don’t have time to run from store to store creating registry lists, and those buying for the couple probably don’t have the time to go to five different stores the soon-to-be newlyweds are registered at.

MyRegistry.com saves time for all involved in wedding registry. The site allows users to create one all-inclusive registry, you can include items from any store in the world and compile everything in one, organized registry. Those buying for the couple who feel that perhaps a cash gift would be more sensible than another ten-speed blender can deposit a cash gift on the website, a feature that sets MyRegistry apart from the competition.

Myself? I always give the same gift. And I’m embarrassed to say I’ve been paying more for it.

Any NT’ers reading? Wannabes? I know bonnie makes kefir and drinks it with coffee. This spring I have become mistress to a batch of grains, continued experimenting with soaking flour, and resumed sprouting. Next up: fermented vegetables. How’d you like to receive a jar of peppery, fermented pickles as a wedding gift?  LOL

  1. I’m bias against it for one reason: it doesn’t have any color photos. If I’m in a creative meal slump, I really need color photos to be inspired. I ALWAYS cook better after spending a week away from home absorbed in the FoodNetwork.

I don’t know that I have a favorite cookbook (she says knowing she has like 50 cookbooks in the kitchen collecting dust…) I cook by dump and pour and what I currently have in the fridge and pantry. If it’s not there, I don’t cook it. I told Rich that I need to get inspired and then spend like two weeks cooking and make my own photo cookbook of our favorite recipes. Who knows…

  2. I never even thought about the lack of photos. ha ha. What I need to be inspired is easy instructions. Even more inspiring are the articles about what is and isn’t healthy to eat. Like you, I cook by what I have on hand, but it’s amazing how much more energy I have to transform “raw materials” into food when I am motivated to provide healthy meals. I get burned out on chopping vegetables really fast otherwise.

Producing your own color cookbook is a great idea! Alot of times I’ll have the vague feeling that there’s something I’m forgetting that we really like to eat. I have a really pretty picture of a homemade pizza that I’m planning to post one of these days.

  3. Wannabe here. Right now I’m lucky to just get enough fruits and veggies in our diet. However, I recently stumbled on a neighborhood source for free range eggs, so things are looking up!

  4. I confess I buy Omega 3 eggs at Costco, but recently when I thought they weren’t carrying them anymore I considered getting a pair of hens.

I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this before, but it might be helpful to you: we try to substitute vegetables for pasta whenever possible. It’s much tastier, and certainly no more work, than whole wheat pasta. Of course, there’s spaghetti squash, but I’m thinking red sauce would also be good over fried zucchini. We eat green beans (again from Costco) with alfredo sauce and steamed carrots with myzithra and browned butter (what we call homer sauce). I’m sure we will eventually come up with a veggie substitute for every pasta dish!

I’m seriously considering doing more about cooking here, since google has locked me out of my blogspot blogs. 😉
