Pre-travel Purchases

Searching for something I could wear close to the body, to contain my valuables, I happened on this “passport wallet” which can hang from a strap or a belt (a modern take on the belt pack?).  On sale I paid $17.50.
In the past week or two, I have also bought a silver-gray trench coat (Gap Spring ’07) and a peach three-quarter sleeve sweater for $1 each at ValVill.  A trench has been one of those “want” items for me for a year or two, but never enough of a need to spend any real money.  No pictures yet because I’m behind on my ironing.

I also scored a couple of really great tops at Macy’s yesterday:  one is a white, roll-sleeve button-up (feeding my inclination to have a summer of nothing but white tops) and a burgundy light-weight sweater with half-length poofy sleeves (found in the fitting room).  Both were marked down to $9.99, from $49 and $78 respectively.

Total since I last posted an update:   $42.62.

Any recent scores you’d like to share?

  1. Good shopping Rebecca! (And a trench is so classic.)

I have nothing great to report other than the bronze flats and neutral slingbacks from Naturalizer you saw on my blog marked down from $100 to $19.99 each.

  2. I bow to your bargain prowess!

I would like to report that I’ve been a wee bit obsessed with finding a stick foundation since you posted about your Bobbi Brown stick that you love. I’ve combed drugstores high and low and of the 3 brands I found, not a one came in a shade that I could wear (I’m just a shade darker than notebook paper). So I hit Ebay. I found a deal on a BB mini foundation stick. It’ll give me the opportunity to try it (at a bargain price) and see if it warrants me shoveling out the big bucks for it. It just came yesterday, so I’ll get to try it out tonight for my mini date night!

  3. Sounds good! I found a tan London Fog trench on winter clearance for $5 last spring. I’ve been really happy to have it. Hopefully yours will serve you well.

Other than the tops I got earlier in the week, I found a gorgeous spring tea pot with a blue bird on the lid at Goodwill this morning for $3. 😉 Honestly, I would love to wear the colors. It’s beautiful purples and blues. Matches my dining room perfectly…

  4. Since shoes are the main wardrobe component on which I am willing to spend real money, even alot of money, I am still very impressed with your purchases, Wendy. 🙂

bee – I’m impressed! What a great idea to check ebay.

I can completely relate, though, to the color thing. I’m not certain I’ve ever said this but it’s rare for me too to find a cosmetics line with a color light enough for me. My BB foundation stick is porcelain, color 0. At least the name is complimentary!

I relate to the price thing too. I think it’s probably up to $40 at Nordie’s now. But the beauty of it is, if kept carefully clean, one stick will last easily over a year.

Janel – those walmart tops on clearance were a real score. And congratulations on your teapot. Now I’m off to read your column at Frugal Hacks!

  5. I’m on the lookout for a “Nice” trench coat to replace the cheap one I bought last year… I’m hoping to find something that’s not too stiff but still waterproof, preferably in gray.

When I went to WalMart (I know, I know…) to pick up my contact lenses last week I perused the sale rack and found a lone pair of straight-bordering-on-skinny legged, dark wash jeans for $4, in my size! I have been reluctant to wear this style as it is not the most flattering for my body, so I am glad to have found a pair with a cost well in proportion to the occasional wear they will get. I also got a gray top with really pretty beading around the neckline for $3. : )

  6. Great finds! I envy you your Value Village; the thrift stores around here don’t seem to entertain the idea of $1 garments!
