Finally! A pair of flats which I can actually wear, without getting blisters!
- On the left, my new leather flats, a crazy muted coral which blends with nearly everything I own. Thrifting for the costumes has its benefits. $5!
- On the right, dd’s new flats: $10 at Rave. Rave is a super cheap junior store at the mall, are they in your area?
One thing I noticed which may account for these shoes being so much more comfortable than my other ones: the leather on these is thin and soft enough that the sides sort of flop over when my foot is not in them.
What tips do you have for finding comfortable flats? My best tip? Good shoes are worth the investment!
I can’t find Rave here – midatlantic states. I wonder if you could tell me what brand name they put in those shoes. Perhaps some east coast chain carries the same merchandise.
ohhh, never mind. I see in the larger picture that they have a little ruffle/scrunchy effect on the sides. I tried on the most comfortable flats with a nice ruching effect but I have wide feet and you can imagine the puffy side interest made my feet look really bizarre.
Tell me what you “do” to your shoes when you thrift them. Am I the only one who is paranoid about wearing someone else’s shoes? (I thrift clothes, houses accessories, blankets, pillow cases, etc, but you can wash those things……)

Oh, and those are *so* cute, Rebecca. One pair of my flats [rocketdog] my sister gave me, and I think they are maybe half a size too big, so they don’t bother my feet. and they do stay on when I’m walking. My others, the leopard prints (that I wear often enough now that it’s cooler ) are from Target and they are soft, so they give. I have trouble, too, Vildy, with the rouching on the sides (or back), but for comfort reasons.
bonnie ~ I don’t think you are paranoid at all. But I don’t have a good answer for you. At various times I have thought about it, but the last two pairs of thrifted shoes I bought (these and the purple keds) looked so new that honestly it never crossed my mind. It probably should have.
Anybody?
I often buy shoes and boots on ebay (esp. Born, since the size and fit are very reliable). I aim for “like new,” and if they look good to me, I don’t do a thing. When I have any kind of doubt, I sometimes spray the inside of the shoes with Tinactin or another antifungal, wipe them out with a paper towel, and let them air dry.
Thanks for sharing!
Smart, Sheri. Thanks. My husband once got some icky foot rash from used shoes (his parents were/ are missionaries and got alot of used things), and he said he’d never wear used shoes again. But the spray is a great idea.
I bought a cute pair of those ballet flats that are sort of like printed canvas tennis shoes at Target-but the darn back rubs on my heel. I’ve had the same problem with all the ones I’ve tried on so far. Grrrr.
Here they are:

Jenn, I actually know of a fix for the raw rubbing canvas shoes. This is a major complaint I’ve heard about with Keds and more than one person has had success with hammering the inside there where it rubs, until it breaks down some.
I like flats with elastic around them. Keeps them on my narrow feet. At first they hurt, but then I got used to them. Wore a bandaid on my heel when I was going to wear them all day. Now I don’t even have to do that anymore.
These are the ones I have. Mine are brown, and no bow. They’ve just redesigned them with a bow. CUTE!

And I have my eye on these. In red. Aren’t they to die for!?

dcrmom, I love that shade of red. Very affordable, too!
I remembered my standard tip about comfortable flats – use Bodyglide (about 8 bucks for a deodorant-like stick). Absolutely wonderful and works great, too, for inner thigh chafing in skirts during hot, sweaty weather.
My problem is that I have a narrow foot, so I can’t buy a cheap shoe usually, and more and more quality shoes (like Naturalizer, which used to be known for narrow, don’t even make a large selection in my size). ARGH!
I love that shade of red, too! Super cute!
Jennifer ~ It is frustrating that it’s become so tough to find narrows. My younger daughter seems to need them – and they are so few and far between, at least where we shop, that she’s really not entirely certain what size shoes she wears.
Your new shoes make me jealous! I have been looking for a pair of flats that don’t give me blisters as well. Pink (okay, coral) would be a huge bonus!
I love the first and second pair of E.B. shoes you featured! I’d love the third pair on someone else. But I’m so not an animal print gal.
Love your flats, Rebecca! Makes me want to go shoe shopping. 🙂 I’ve had my eye on the Goodwill down the street from me for a while now, and just need to work up the courage (and the spare time to go in). Maybe I have a gorgeous pair of flats waiting for me! Personally, I keep thinking I’d like a pair of silver flats. I think they’d be super cute with jeans!
