Awhile ago Carrie and I were talking about jean substitutes. By that I mean non-jean bottoms that you can wear you suspect jeans are the order of the day, but are not quite certain. Some examples:
- denim skirt
- khakis or cords
- casual dress or skirt
- capris or dressy shorts
The event she was going to was an informal memorial gathering in someone’s home. If I recall correctly (Carrie?), she was very happy she elected to wear black slacks.
What’s your favorite “jean substitute”? For fall and winter, I like velvet jeans and I’ll be needing a new pair this year. I’d love to have a color more exciting than black.
Skirts in the summer, denim or khaki, maybe with heeled sandals, just to be sure. In the winter, I would wear trouser jeans with heels and a nice top, or slacks with heeled boots and a fun top, not too serious or formal.
Ooh, I used to have the best pair of “velvet” burgundy pants. They were fantastic! But, ah, the days of my youth are no more. At least, the days of my childless, girlish body…I am a skirt wear-er. Even in the winter I prefer to wear skirts whenever I can.
Burgundy would be perfect! It would be so easy to make festive at the holidays.
I bet you are thankful for all the nice tights that are available now. Skirts have their advantages. 🙂
Hi Rebecca! I can’t believe how fast ths summer went…
I hate jeans, mostly because I can never find a flattering comfy pair. I think I finally did, but after a few days of wearing them I’m feeling kind of dull. I’m a skirt and dress wearer but sometimes it’s hard to transition, from summer to fall for example. Some days bare legs and sandals feel too bare but it’s not time to drag out the tights and boots.
I also look dreadful in black so that cuts down a lot of skirt and dress options that make the transition easier. Suggestions anyone?
Your blog is great Rebecca 🙂
Denim or corduroy skirts are my favorite — at least until the weather gets really cool!
I’ll be looking for another pair or cords for this season to swap out for jeans in the cooler weather. I love the look of velvet, but I am often cat owned …
Christine–nude hose with no toes and peep-toe heels would make a summer skirt transition to the early fall weather that does not call for heavy tights and skirts, but needs more coverage. I live in TX, so it is easy to wear skirts and sandals into October most of the time. If you could find flattering pants to wear with heeled sandals or peep-toe heels that would work too, I think. But I’m no expert, especially considering I stay home with my kids these days.
I love, love, love jeans, but for a substitute, In the winter it’s cords. In the summer, a jean skirt or khaki capris.
Rebecca, I haven’t forgotten about that jeans trial I was going to do. What’s the website I’m supposed to use??
Okay, brain fart on the “nude” part of the pantyhose suggestion. I meant to say lightweight, complimentary hose/tights. Sorry.
Good thing you corrected yourself, Nicole. JK!!! I didn’t even notice a problem with what you said the first time. 🙂
