Real Fashion for Real People! Tessa’s Business Look

The ever-frugal Tessa featured this inspirational quote on the email she sent in:

The philosopher Diogenes was eating bread and lentils for supper. He was seen by the philosopher Aristippus, who lived comfortably by flattering the king.

Said Aristippus, “If you would learn to be subservient to the king, you would not have to live on lentils.”

Said Diogenes, “Learn to live on lentils, and you will not have to be subservient to the king.”

–The Song of the Bird, by Anthony de Mello

Tessa makes her sartorial “lentils” look pretty tasty!

Quiz Style: Glamorous

Personal Style Idiom: Classic with a bit of trend thrown in.

Lifestyle segment: Business

Top: J.C. Penney, $4

Skirt: Vintage at thrift store, $2

Belt: Red croc print from J.C. Penney, $2

Shoes: Red patent slingbacks from Shoe Carnival, ~$28 (but I had a gift card, so they were free!)

Handbag: Vintage from a flea market, $6

(I just have to say, that’s an inspiring use of red.)

This week of Real Fashion for Real People has been such fun. When shall we do it again?

  1. Of all the examples shown, this one would have fit me the closest. This is pretty much what I did wear but had trouble with other lifestyle segments. I might have chosen a black purse and a pewter necklace but I wouldn’t have thought to use a short sleeved shirt and I really love how that looks. Love the quote, too.

I’ve been working with the idea of your lifestyle segments and been stuck on the business one. Since I changed my style 180 degrees and went for Beachy, I couldn’t figure out wht Beachy wore when she went to town to meet with others. Finally put representative clothes for each segment I was looking at on a rack and hit on a partial solution. My favorite dress is a skimming shift with shaping darts – so a cross between a shift and a sheath. When I acquire any more dresses, this is the look I’m going to go with. There’s a joke here somewhere about “shiftless.”

I would love to have participated in this project but have a new computer and we haven’t attempted to get the balky camera set up with it yet. Hopefully, the next round.

  2. Thanks for featuring me, Rebecca! This was so much fun! 🙂 That quote is my email signature and kind of my theme for the next few years as I get completely done with school and start working hard to be rid of school debt. I don’t want to be subservient to the king forever! 😉

Hope you run the real fashion segment again soon.

  3. Love the way the red pops on this outfit. Why can I never find these great deals at JCP? Thanks to everyone this week for the inspiration!

  4. I love this outfit! I am not brave (or creative, or whatever), and would have never thought to bear the black, red and blue together. Especially the blue and black. But I love the effect, and I may have to try this!

My favorite place for clearance deals is JCP too! Our JCP has AMAZINGLY cheap clearance prices, and I love to go there. Right now it is only 60% off, but I wait for that sign in the window to change to 70% and I’m there in a flash!

    Love this segment!
