In keeping with our ongoing modesty discussions (don’t forget – The Carnival of Modesty is here this Friday!), I just want to say what a blessing it is to be part of a church that demonstrates their love for one another by how they dress. This past weekend we had our annual church family camp and I was not embarrassed once by anyone’s choice of apparel!
But, after camping all weekend, what does one wear to church when church is a baptismal service held on a sandy beach in full sun? This is what I chose, and I was quite comfortable, after I got over the laughs of my immediate family. My daughter (her outfit next) said I’d have to sit next to her and her dad or nobody would recognize me.
(We only had one child with us; our youngest has temporarily gone south, not for the winter but to the winter, and Mrs Lady isn’t feeling well.)
This outfit is what an almost 18 year old Romantic Innovator would wear. (She really did wear it, we just forgot to take a picture until we got home.) The shirt says “celebrate”, which I think is perfect for the occasion. What do you think?
The pink hat is gorgeous on you, Rebecca. Pink gives such a nice rosy glow to the face, especially when worn as a hat (or even an umbrella!)
I like your daughter’s daring mix of prints, although I would never, ever guess that she was nearly 18 based on that outfit. Do you think it’s possible to dress too young when you are in your late teens? Or does anything go, as long as it is suitably modest?
Thanks for the great pictures!
Thanks! I am really not a hat person, but it is practical to have one or two. This one we got at an art show and it’s all cotton. Plus it like matches with everything I have!
Hmmm. Interesting question. Overall, I think most “rules” are specific to the individual idiom, or at least to the style personality. Meaning that, while this outfit might look young on most people, certain individuals could wear it even in their old age and look perfectly normal. Because it suits their idiom.
The only rules I think are generally applicable to everyone are: face as focal point, feeling like yourself in your clothes, being able to move and function and, of course, modesty.
But that all doesn’t really answer your question. I’d love to hear from others on it.

I think the answer to Polia’s question is maybe in your comment Rebecca about faces being the focal point…. if you took a photo of anyone without their head (!) their clothes might look a bit odd, eg I wear black suits for work as a lawyer/attorney and I guess if someone took a photo of my torso without the head a viewer might assume I was older than I am; alternatively if I were wearing t-shirt and shorts which I think is fun and fine on the beach then I could be much younger. I do think it’s great to have fun with clothes especially as a teenager, before you end up in the office every day….;)
It is so true that taking pictures without the head changes how things look!
Thanks Kate! and welcome to the blog!
