I’ve never been disappointed by a $4 tee shirt, to my recollection. Mind you, I’m not talking about “junky” t-shirts (when I’m feeling more diplomatic I call them “message” t-shirts). No, I just mean basic – crew, vee, scoop, short sleeves, no sleeves, etc, etc. – in a solid color. A solid color I wear.
Because I do alot of thrifting, and thrift stores are generally not the best place to find basic knits, my wardrobe can come up short in this category. But in the last 24 hours, I picked up a salmon color v-neck for $3.98 at Target and a white crew neck for $3 at Walmart.
Application: wherever you are, cruise the lowest discounted clearance rack. If you find a basic tee-shirt in your color scheme for under $5, buy it!
Currently, this week immediately following the fourth of July, stores are clearancing spring/summer assortments. At stores with a fast clearance cycle that means prices we like, although I generally find the best prices in department stores a little later. (The end of September = $2 tank tops!)
Application: the week after 4th of July is a great time to pop in to the store where you would shop if money were no object.
And speaking of thrifting, I couldn’t believe the number of jeans left on the rack for 99 cents at Value Village this morning. July is the absolute best time to find jeans at the thrift store (nobody’s wearing them now and they haven’t started to think about back to school yet).
Application: thrift store finds are best in the off-season.

I was out yesterday and found a cute chocolate colored summer blouse at JC Penney for less than $4. It was originally close to $30. I also got a nightie for 60% off, and at Wal-Mart I got 3 tank tops for $3.50 each. So it was indeed a good day for bargains.
WOO HOO! That’s awesome, CG!
And there are good sales online too. Blest with sons just got a PILE of stuff from Coldwater Creek (stuff she can use for fall) for really cheap. I’m going to see if I can slip in a trip to JCPenney today.
Also, if anyone in Spokane sees this: Spokane Discount on Dishman Mica has a huge outdoor sale going on, all clothes are like 75% off.
I thought of this post last night when my husband and I were at the mall. So of course, we popped into my favorite store…Ann Taylor Loft. The sales were quite good, but my score for the day was an adorable pair of sandals orginally $49 that I got for $5 and some change! I’m doing the happy dance – and it’s all because of your suggestion. 🙂 Thanks!
That’s awesome, Jenna! I don’t think I’ve ever been disappointed by a $5 pair of shoes either. Well, unless they didn’t fit. 😉
