What color – ahem – undergarment is correct under the white blouse?
- Black.
- White.
- Pink or nude. Not to be racist, flesh-tone is what I mean.
- It doesn’t matter as long as a camisole is worn.
- Preferably the flesh-tone topped by a white tank.
Here’s a clue: white + white = INTENSE WHITE. Picture yourself on the platform, singing with the worship team or choir, wearing the requisite white blouse. What’s the man in the congregation seeing?
The exception: recently I’ve seen some cute long sleeved white tops, white with see-through paisley pattern. By wearing a long sleeved colored top, in effect you would have Build Your Own Paisley. That works with my idiom!
I always thought flesh tone unless it was a very thick shirt, or unless you were wearing an actual cami that covered your entire belly.
Skin tone.
But I could get away with white or light pink if I am wearing my opaque white cami underneath the shirt as an underpinning intended to show through the blouse. Generally I wear a flesh tone cami under a white blouse if required.
Flesh tone. When I was preaching that to a friend once, she said something about it then looked as if you weren’t wearing a bra at all. In her world it was important that people knew she was wearing the proper undergarments–lol!
nude/flesh/tan/pink whatever your tone is.. if you are african american you would wear black, right?
Don’t we always seem to find these things out the hard way? LOL
LOL. Lady Laura, your friend’s world maybe isn’t so out there: I have those same thoughts concerning VPL. There are worse things!
I think a very dark-skinned person would wear dark brown, black, or whatever color was the closest. (Any readers of African descent? I’d love to hear from you on this.)
My thoughts on the cami thing: spaghetti straps are not very attractive on most people and automatically look like underwear to men. If I need one under a white shirt, which is an attractive look, I go for one with a wide enough strap that I would consider wearing it by itself. If it’s white. If it’s flesh tone, no matter.
My thoughts on black under: Only as in the last example, a long sleeved top designed to show what’s under and then I would wear long sleeve under as well. If a black sleeveless top is worn under a white crochet, eyelet, or sheer pattern long sleeve then what really tends to stand out is the bare arms showing through the white. Just my opinion.
I have farily pale skin and I noticed when wearing a once favorite crocheted shell that a bra in my skin tone showed through here or there as too light and especially if it were a bra that had any sheen. So I switched to a bra in a deeper shade of beige and that solved the problem. I wear the same thing under white and it works.
I can see that. I am always surprised when I see how dark the bras that blend with my skin are.
I don’t know, which is why I never wear plain white. I’m extreamly fair, and for some reasons flesh tone shows through for me, as does white. So I usually just wear a cami under a white shirt, or a jacket over it. I don’t know what else to do.
We are all pretty white too. And many white shirts are very thin, it seems. Like you, I just find it safer to wear something under.
At least you noticed!
Agreed with everyone… Flesh tones are the best.
Especially under super bright lights.. or just in sunlight in general. White bras are like a beacon screaming: “Hey you!.. YOU! Look! LOOK AT ME”… 🙂
I try and buy nude-coloured everything so I never have a fear of what will show through and what won’t… Except for camisoles and tank tops though. Those are so cute they HAVE to show through.

I’m newly grateful for this topic since I put on a white shirt today that was a little thinner than what I’d usually buy. The darker nude bra that worked well under cutwork showed through a mite especially at the back. Even the lighter nude bra shows a bit of an outline if you’re looking for it – I was. Think I need that flesh colored tank. I have one in a nylon or poly but might be good to keep an eye out for a thin cotton one now.
I’m a few years late on this, but I found your blog while rummaging around for a modest swimsuit and am hooked.
Anyway, going back (or forward?) to the “V-necks are out” post, I agree, except in the case of white V-necks. Last year, all I could find in the way of basic tops were tube tops (I bought four or five from American Eagle for a total of $20) and have started wearing them under a white V-neck. The tube top provides a little more coverage than a regular tank or cami, but it’s still a cute pop of color.
