Fashion Lab: Short Sleeved Pants

Announcing what I will wear to MOPS tomorrow: either the first outfit OR the same, but with jeans instead of short sleeved pants. And how about the sequin one for opening night?

Now, announcing the topic for next week’s Fashion Lab: The White Blouse. I will be picturing I am Fashion’s 6 Ways, with a twist – using the same shirt for all 6 looks! Anyone else who would like to play, put up a post sometime next Thursday and I will link to you Carnival-style.

Back to short sleeve pants, do you think they have a longer life expectancy than the slinky gauchos? Why or why not?

  1. I love the second one with the magenta jacket.. mostly because of the shoes.. they are TOO COOL!! Really, I’m not a shoe person (I think I own less than 10 pair) but I love looking at them!!

  2. Those really are the greatest shoes and I don’t feel like I’m boasting to say that. We found them in near-perfect vintage condition at Goodwill when my daughter needed shoes for piano recitals. She has since grown out of them (oh well!) and cheerfully passed them to me.

One time when she was playing for adjudications, the adjudicator pointed them out to the entire audience. She said they were perfect for piano performance! We didn’t tell her we call them the asparagus shoes!

Actually I don’t own alot of shoes either. Besides the ones pictured, I have two sneakers, two black pumps and one or two other random pairs of casual shoes. Plus flip-flops, dress boots, and Sorels. Sometimes it seems like alot.

  3. Yet another wonderful experiment. I love the last two dressed down versions. I definitely think these shorts will have a longer life expectancy than gauchos.

  4. I’m lovin’ in particular looks 2 & 3 Rebecca! #2 is so polished looking! (Plus, the shoes are wonderful.)

My short sleeved pants are now 3 years old … and still goin’ strong. Plus I saw someone downtown wearing some yesterday. Quite a change from the snow I missed on Monday.

  5. Wow, I think all of the looks look great! I especially love the first look. I’m a casual girl, so I was glad to see look #3, because now I won’t be afraid to try to dress them down. Amazing how versatile they are! I think look #2 is my least favorite. I think I like it better when they shorts are the the ‘biger’ piece (are they in the other pix, or is that my imagnation? I’m still catching on here. hehe). However on the flip side, that look is the one that makes the shorts look the most slimming.

And I’m happy to report I bought a pair of short pants on sale yesterday at Penney’s. I would have NEVER thought to try them on if not for you. But they are really flattering!!

  6. Okay, I love ALL of those! That’s a rockin’ belt in #2! I think #3 is my favorite. Of course, I don’t have the science of “why” figured out, but I think it has to do with the cleanness of the colors.

And I definitely think that these “short sleeved pants” will stick around longer than the gauchos. I said I would never wear gauchos because I hadn’t seen a single person that I thought they looked really good on. I did end up buying a maternity pair when I was pregnant and I loved them! Not sure how they really looked, but they were comfy. So…All of that to say, I believe these pants/shorts flatter so many body types and are so versatile that they will be around for a while. Or maybe I should say, they’ll be around in my wardrobe for a while even if they go out of style. 😉

  7. The only trouble with look #2 is that by opening night it will probably be too warm around here to wear it.

A few random bits about the other pieces pictured:

    1) the jacket in #1 was $1 this week at the thrift store. I did end up wearing jeans today (it was 30F this morning!), but I wore my new 1979 wide legged jeans and laughed.
    2) I scooped the belt in 2 for $2 at JCPenney when I got the shorts. I’ll try to post a better picture of it. (It definitely rocks!)
    3) another $1 thrift find, the coral jacket in 3 was brand new with tags! It looks a little big in the picture, but I’ve washed it since and it’s perfect.
    4) The news is not all good. I’ve been fighting with those shoes, which I should probably have returned to the Rack, ever since I got them. I kept thinking they’d break in. Last week I got some heel pads for them; that helped, but then I tried walking two miles in them and ended up with blisters. They’re okay for light shopping though.

  8. I definitely think these will last longer than gauchos! You have to be so tall for gauchos to not hit mid-calf, and the lightweight knit gauchos are too clingy.

    I love your thrifty finds!

  9. Rebecca,
I LOVE short-sleeved pants! I call them bermudas because my mom did back in the day when she wore them. I wear these all summer long and love the look. Since I’m 44, my legs aren’t as pretty as they once were, so these short-sleeved pants are a perfect replacement for shorts. I think bermudas will outlive gouchos just because gouchos just don’t look good on everyone.

A frugal tip……last year my 19yod wanted a pair of denim bermudas but she just couldn’t find any her size. I told her to let me cut off a pair of her old jeans and hem them to the proper length. I even made a slight slit on the outside of each leg. She loved them and her girlfriends wanted to know where she found them. She told them her mom made them. They think I’m super-woman!

  10. Age-wise I’m right behind you, Jody, and I’m thinking short-sleeved pants for the rest of my life.

Last night my hero and I were in a store that was selling knee-length cut-offs. I actually have two almost identical pairs of jeans that fit well and I only paid $1for them, so I am planning on cutting off the pair that is long enough that I have to think about what shoes I can wear.

Maybe I can be super-woman too!

  11. Yay Christie!

Of course, as soon as I got mine, it starts raining. That’s okay, it won’t last forever. 🙂

  12. I tried them on a little while ago and felt silly wearing heeled shoes … a t-strap, dark brown leather pump. I wear these shoes with skirts that are the same length as the shorts. Maybe the shoes seemed too dressy? Maybe a casual wedge sandal instead? My shorts are dark brown, 97% cotton, 3% lycra, and they have a little sheen to them.

And yes, its too cold to wear them here right now too.

  13. I wonder if the shoes felt a hair heavy … or the combination just didn’t suit your idiom. Would a lighter dress sandal feel silly too? If so, it may be that in your mind shorts are too casual for a dressy shoe. That’s okay. They will still be very useful and flattering.

    A wedge sandal, for sure!

Definitely give anything that makes you feel silly a pass. 😉

  14. I think you may have identified the main issue … heels with sandals don’t suit my idiom! That’s why I felt silly, and even, overdressed. Also, I do think these shoes look more “winter.” A heeled (not to high) strappy sandal may suit my tastes better. And for casual, I did like the bermudas with my dansko sandals.

  15. YAY!

I’m totally looking forward to trying mine with my new born sandals when they come in. I just hope the browns don’t clash.

  16. I love the 2nd one! Actually, I love them all, but I love the look of that 2nd one w/the plum (?) jacket. That is just darling! You are adorable!! And I have to add, that like the others, I love the shoes as well!!

    Cathy

  17. Thanks Cathy! I am hoping it won’t be too hot to wear that outfit to the semi-casual banquet May 7 (this year there has been no mention of “no shorts”). Sequined t-shirts = evening in my idiom. 🙂
