At the end of February we often find ridiculously low prices on clearance. And ask ourselves, “how many of these should I get?” Hot Off the Sales Rack posted recently on that topic, which post came to mind Friday afternoon as I was combing the clearance racks.
For some odd reason manufacturers tend to put collections together so they look good on the rack, rather than on a variety of people. The net effect is this: if you find something in a grouping that works for you, the rest of the grouping is likely to work also. Conversely, I found a really cute shirt in four colors, none of which I can wear.
I agree with SRR:
“it’s perfectly fine to buy duplicates of basics”
Whether in two different colors (if they are available) or even two of the exact same thing, if it’s cheap and you will use it, why not? SRR bought two camis for $1 each, I can think of lots of colors it would make sense to have two of: white, gray, black, muted blue, brown, pink, and on and on.
Ideally in buying two of the same piece, however, one would be a neutral color and the other would be your signature color.
And they’d be so cheap as to be almost free. Hey, it could happen!
Aha! I knew this was a perfectly legitimate idea, even after a fashion “expert” on Oprah poo-pood it!
Absolutely! i buy duplicates of camis, tanks, turtlenecks, and other basics, they are worn so often, they are totally worth it.
Thanks for the feature, Rebecca. I’m really flattered *blush*
I agree with your assessment of groupings. It’s so unfortunate that if you don’t fit into that group, you’re out of luck. I guess things are the way they are because having a variety of colors is more of a cash cow than a variety of fits–they don’t have to spend so much time and money on the drawing board.
So true! I do that often. I was at Penney’s a few weeks back and found 2 of the longer type, deep v-neck sweaters that were different colors, but the same as one I already had and loved it! So I now have 3 of the sweaters — blue, red, and black. The first I spent $20 bucks on. The other two? $1.97 a piece! Gotta love that!
That’s awesome, Carrie! My favorite price: so cheap it’s almost free. Ok, it’s really my second favorite price. Free, of course, is my favorite. But much harder to find the exact right thing. 🙂
