A Clean Pair of Pants

Gap Straight stretch cotton pants $49.50; also available in black.

Since we appear to be free of trouser trend tyranny (like that alliteration?), I can tell you – I just like the look of these plain and simple pants from the Gap.

Another random pant thought: the silhouette created by the pants depends far more on the shape of the individual than it does on the size of the leg opening or cut through the knee, although those things clearly make a difference. With my rounded thighs, most pants, even fairly wide-legged ones, will produce a tapered effect.

A couple of weeks ago, I watched a line of ladies, in all manner of pants, walk across a room. Only the one who was about a size 1 looked as if any part of her was balanced by the width of her boot cut jeans. The rest were what they were.

What type of trousers do you like best on your figure type?

  1. Well… I’m no fashionista. But I can tell you that my $5 Gap Loose Fit jeans – which are a size 8 so they actually fit perfectly instead of loosely – with a button fly are TOO cool. I would need you to tell me if they are the “right” jeans. But I’m pretty sure they’re the most flattering pair in my arsenal as far as looking skinny! 🙂 And they’re the first pair of pants I’ve ever hemmed for myself (as the extra four inches of length looked a bit silly) so I am feeling quite pleased with myself!

  2. WOO HOO! Blest, that’s awesome! Who cares if they’re “right” according to me or anybody else if they look good and make you feel like yourself?

Speaking of “lavender sweaters”, have you heard A Nice Piece of Art by FM Static? I love that song, but I finally went and read the review that I linked to back when I posted about it, and the guy is really rough on them. I don’t know what your opinion about Christian rock is, but, for us, this album works.

Did you get my email asking if you live somewhere you can wear sweaters? Send me your new address, I’ll send you some clothes. 🙂

  3. Is “it depends” a good answer Rebecca?? I have a classic swimmer’s physique, and the bottom half of me is currently size 0. I can wear skinnies, boot cut (although my legs are so short they are only slightly flared on me), straight and even some wide leg trousers.

That said, I often have the front pockets altered, and high waisted is generally not that great on me.

I cannot wear cargos. I cannot wear pleats. And I want the pants pictured in black …

Light coloured pants and I do not get along …

  4. Depends is always a good answer, because it usually does!

What do you do with the front pockets?

Sadly I cannot wear cargos either. Because they would work within my idiom, but for the saddlebags. And the cargo pockets near the hem are just too gimmicky for me.

Isn’t it interesting that khakis were invented originally because they would stay clean-looking? I like the black too, but it depends some on the fabric. I have a really nice pair of Gap black boot cuts that seem to attract every little tiny piece of white fuzz in the room. These don’t look like that kind of fabric, but it’s hard to tell from the picture.

  5. I like wide legged pants for myself, flat on the front, no pockets. And long, so I can hide very high heels underneath which helps make my legs look long.

  6. Front pockets on dress pants I often end up taking out — either shortening the pocket or removing it and stitching the pocket closed. Side pockets are less of an issue for me.

I worry about black attracting white/grey cat hair … I bought a sateen suit I thought would be excellent, and it attracts them like there’s no tomorrow.

  7. Okay you guys, this is funny: when the first Wendy comment came I could not think what pleated pants were !*?*! I kept picturing the super wide pants they are showing now, but with pleats all the way down — like a pleated skirt!

Then when Moi’s comment came in, I got it.

    LOL

  8. 😉 I don’t think I can wear accordion pleated pants, either …

Seriously, though, it’s an interesting phenomenon when a description or phrase won’t prompt the right image.

  9. Well, I’m definitely a flat-front person, but I have seen pleats at Nordstrom recently. Fashion being what it is, I wonder if at some time in the future I will change my mind …

  10. I am interested in what style pants are best for my shape. I have the “mommy of 8” belly and would like to try not to make that the focal point! I am not that much into fashion but I would love to not get a headache when trying to buy a pair of jeans!

  11. Kristine ~ You totally made my day by visiting and leaving a comment!

To answer your question: for a slight mom belly, I like a flat-front, straight-leg pant. The thing to avoid is pulling the waistband up over the “pooch”, so a mid-rise may be better than an over-the-belly-button rise.
