Fashion Lab: The Column Effect

Yay! Once again, trial conquers error.

The concept here is to illustrate how to create a slimming “column effect”.

Since it’s taken me so long to figure out how to do the pictures and get this up, I think I’ll just hit “publish” without any commentary.

What comments do you have?

  1. Well, I’m still in the learning phase and all, but I’d say the last one has quite a “slimming column effect.” I love the continual flow of the black! For some reason the word “regal” is coming to mind. However, I do like all three outfits!

And (not to change the subject…I would have emailed this instead if I could) but…I need help! What do you wear to a “formal” wedding that’s both modest and gorgeous? Oh, not to mention I’m still nursing and none of my “really nice” clothes fit me right now.

  2. In these pictures (and pictures sometimes do lie), I think the tailoring of the pink shirt is actually the most slimming. If the buttons were done upon the blazers, I might have a different opinion, though.

  3. Jenna, that’s a big question. I will get back to it. The wedding: when and where? And are you related or involved anyway, or are you just a guest?

Wendy, that’s funny. I bought the pink shirt for a different reason, not intending to keep it for myself, but after trying it on for this project I am keeping it.

Getting to the intent I had with the pictures was tough, mainly because I am pretty small. The pink jacket is actually held in back with office clips, just to make the column effect of the parallel vertical lines in the front. But I wanted to show the idea, in case it’s helpful to people who are bigger than they’d like to be.

I may wear the pink jacket buttoned up, with my black pencil skirt, later in the spring. But probably with the pink striped shirt, not the black tee. What do you think?

  4. Yes, it is a big question! I only found out yesterday that the wedding was “formal.” The wedding is the beginning of March and in NC. The time is 5pm with a following sit down dinner and dancing with a band. I’m only attending as a guest, my husband is a friend of the groom (although not in the wedding). When we asked the groom what the attire was, he came back with “formal” and defined it as a suit for my husband and a dress for me. The formal part of it is what I keep getting stuck on! Any kind of help would be wonderful!

  5. I think the pencil skirt would be good both ways, Rebecca, the black tee making the look more casual.

I’m glad you’re going to keep the shirt! 🙂

  6. I love the last look…the solid color underneath (is that black…I thought you weren’t a black fan!) with the POP of color! Awesome!! Is pink your favorite/signature color?

  7. Thanks, elleabelle. I am not much of a fan of black, but I put this together for the purpose of illustrating the concept. I think it worked.

Yes, you guessed it – pink is my signature color. A wide variety of pinks, and I use a brown-burgundy also. Pink has become a favorite, although it hasn’t always been. Sometimes I wonder if I’ll get tired of it.

  8. Um…I’m like JodyC, I like all three! Rebecca, I don’t think you need any “slimming effects” at all, you have a nice and slim figure 🙂
