Via Storybook Woods, what I propose to replace that wretched fashion don’t: the dress worn over pants. (This particular picture is not necessarily my favorite, but seemed most appropriate for today, Memorial Day.) Let the apron be revived!
Unfortunately, the ladies who really want aprons to be fashionable are not the ones positioned to make it happen; what we need are for trendy young people to adopt the look. And don’t you think they should?
do you have to be able to cook to wear one? because i think they’re cute, and functional and all, but my family would really laugh at me.

It is true that the people who can pull off this look are few. I say I’m one of them though. My excuse is that I’m Indian, and Indian people wear salwar kameez, which is basically a dress over pants, all the time.
I do approve the aprons, though, and I am young though not particularly trendy.

Well I guess sadly to say, I like the dress over jeans look. But I am also totally for aprons over jeans to. I bet you will see. The trend for aprons is hot right now and those trend trackers are I am sure well aware of it. Just you wait and see. Soon Channel well be making aprons!! Clarice 😉

I love my aprons! And there’s a very easy instruction for a dish towel apron that covers you from the chest down over at Martha Stewart. SO CUTE and SO easy to make. I like making these for gifts, and I enjoy using them in my own home. Aprons SAVE our clothes from stains and grease and dirt.

Is a dress over a slim skirt a fashion don’t too? I love that look, but I like the dress over pants too if it is done well (which it often is not).
There is an outfit here in PT that makes funky/sexy little aprons. I just use the full one I got from Grandma Fletcher when I first left home (when I rememember to wear one).
1st let me clarify just because a dress over pants is a fashion don’t in my idiom, doesn’t mean it’s always bad. The problem is, and Beth alluded to it, that people see a dress over pants (or a skirt over pants) and think, “Oh, it’s okay to wear a dress over pants.” And then proceed to do it badly. I could probably figure out how to do it well, but I would feel too contrived.
2nd, about aprons. I bought one last summer, because I really need it when I work in the kitchen at camp. But at home I wear my husband’s old flannel shirt to protect my clothes (it’s a large tall).
And last, I have never seen the dress over slim skirt. I’m sure it can be done well; considering length-balancing, silhouette, etc.; or like a bag lady.
Yea. You have been in my head again Rebecca. I have been thinking about aprons lately. Not only did Susanna Wesley use one with the best purpose ( to throw it up over her head to pray to the Lord in the midst of raising many children) but my husband has taken to bacon lately….ooooo, splatter stains. However, as one commented, men hardly find them attractive. To matronly? So, I think we should take on the quest for the apron as the accesory of today.
As for only needing one for cooking…. think of the benefits of extra pockets in any situation.

Also, at the Saturday Farmer’s Market yesterday there was not one but TWO vendors selling funky/sexy aprons. Most were half-aprons, though, which makes me think they are not so functional.
I have also been noticing dress over pants outfits. I think it is a tall girl thing. I think of wearing a dress over something when I am too tall or too large to safely (modestly) wear a cute dress. Put it over a slim skirt and it is a long tunic!
