When Losing Weight
Designer Ella mentioned, in the comments on my Walmart post, that she was losing weight. It got me thinking about wardrobe strategies for those who are losing weight, which is just about everybody these days. A few random thoughts:
- When hitting the thrift stores, each item doesn’t need to be perfectly current. Remember you are buying what you would have bought in the past few years, if you had been your current size. But don’t spend much, you won’t be wearing it long.
- You don’t need much. I have several friends who wear the same few things over and over and look great. Remember this isn’t going to be your wardrobe forever, it’s okay if you get tired of it. You are going to be able to buy new!
- Stay within the silhouette(s) that work for you. And that may change on the “weigh down”. Review the 6 silhouettes here.
- Make sure all the other elements work: color, style, whatever makes you feel like yourself.
- Although it is easy to overlook under garments, a well-fitting bra makes a big difference in how slim and trim you look to the world.
When you reach your goal, be sure and get rid of temptation by passing on these transitional pieces. ![]()

Teen Style Tuesday: Letter to a Future Teen
Apparently you scared your mom when you came out of the fitting room and walked all the way across the store wearing a strapless dress with your regular bra under it, thereby displaying your underwear to any and all shoppers who happened to be looking, both male and female. That is the only explanation I can think of for her response.
When she said, “I think that will be itchy”, I’m guessing that was some sort of mom-speak for either, “I am not ready to see you as a young lady, go back to the fitting room and change back into my little girl” OR “uh, I don’t know how to tell you this, but you’re not dressed“. I’m not sure which.
If I can be of any further assistance, please don’t hesitate to drop me a line.

Tips on Wearing a Halter Dress
You know, when I selected the dresses for the fashion lab, I wasn’t even thinking about issues concerning halter dresses. No, I was simply thinking about prints, not having to have my picture taken, and the myriad other things that have been on my mind this week (like trying to make time for blog improvements).
But when Wendy brought up the undergarment issue, I remembered this: Adding Bra Cups to a Halter Top or Dress at the Sewing Divas, a blog I’d truly be inspired by if I were doing any sewing (it’s there in the back of my mind, it just never gets to the top of the to-do list). The technique may not work for you Susannahs, but us Trinnys could certainly get by with it.
A couple of other halter dress dos and don’ts:
- Do sew it up a little if the front neckline is too open.
- Do make sure there is enough fabric on the sides/underarms.
- Don’t wear a halter dress to sit in a church pew. Unless, of course, you wish to appear naked to everyone who sees you from behind.
What would you add to the list?

What to Wear Under Your White Shirt
What color - ahem - undergarment is correct under the white blouse?
- Black.
- White.
- Pink or nude. Not to be racist, flesh-tone is what I mean.
- It doesn’t matter as long as a camisole is worn.
- Preferably the flesh-tone topped by a white tank.
Here’s a clue: white + white = INTENSE WHITE. Picture yourself on the platform, singing with the worship team or choir, wearing the requisite white blouse. What’s the man in the congregation seeing?
The exception: recently I’ve seen some cute long sleeved white tops, white with see-through paisley pattern. By wearing a long sleeved colored top, in effect you would have Build Your Own Paisley. That works with my idiom!

I’ll Say It Again About White Pants
Spring is definitely upon us, bringing with it light colored pants. Here’s what I said last year about what I don’t like about white pants:
ladies, I just don’t want to wonder what kind of underwear you are wearing, and whether I am seeing skin through your thin pants. Please! Right now, today, try on your white pants from last season. Be honest, are they decent? If they are linen or light-weight cotton, they should be lined. If they are denim, they should be thick. If in doubt, throw them OUT!
To which I would like to add:
Never wear skin-tight, skin-color anything!
Seen on the street just the other day: a jogger wearing close-to-skin-color spandex pants. Ugh!

The Magic Knickers
Regarding this post and attending comments at the ever-popular A Dress A Day blog:
- Here’s an affordable basic version of the magic knickers.

Melanie didn’t agree with my opinion on the (blue) dress in question. I said, “I love everything about the runway one EXCEPT that half of her bosoms are exposed”. But I don’t mind. She did it without being disagreeable
Update: after Wendy’s comment, I think I like these better.

Pantihose in the Summer
In response to all the people who get here via googling “pantihose, do I have to wear them?”, the simple one-word answer is NO. The exception: if required by your professional, written or non-written, dress-code.
Now, in practice people, what do you really do? (Did I mention that we are in a record-breaking heat-wave?) I don’t wear them in the summer, and several fashionable ladies shared in response to a previous post that they don’t either.

Pantihose: Do You Wear Them?
“In the business environment, hosiery is a must. Bare legs, no matter how bronzed and smooth, are not a substitute for legs in good quality hosiery.”
But, since what we are talking about here is what to wear for Easter, I will certainly leave that choice to you, the reader, and what works for your own particular idiom. Actually, I spout off alot about the right things to wear, but a primary value of mine is the value of individuality.
That said, this technique for selecting stocking color works:
To find the correct shade of stockings, slip the stocking over one arm and compare to the other. They should match.
Or will you be wearing air stockings this year?
