The parenthetical prologue to this piece: yesterday, in the course of daily life, I encountered a lack, which seemed to me to be worth a trip to the store to have immediately filled. *face palm* Four stores later (add two thrifted cashmere sweaters purchased for $11) I reached the following conclusion.
I should’ve ordered from Amazon prime and taken a nap instead!
Biological rhythms (I was going to say “of life”, but that would be redundant, wouldn’t it? ):
- Circadian rhythm: the daily. This has been in the air lately, with all the news about sleeping and screens. Discovery your chronotype here: http://thepowerofwhenquiz.com/. I am a lion; hear me roar! Also, can I say here how much I think we need to revise the policy of seasonal time change?!
- Ultradian rhythm: within the daily. I first encountered this idea on Aviva Romm’s podcast.
- Circannual rhythms: yearly. This I had never heard named until I followed the theme above to this other health podcast, where it was mentioned by the author of Whole 30, which I have heard of. Except on closer reflection, this would be what the seasons are and so, here in the great Northwest, the most obvious.
Mulling over these ideas, led me to think about a couple of other rhythms. I have no idea what the scientific names of these are.
- Weekly. I remember hearing of failed experiments in lengthening the workweek. Not surprised.
- Monthly. By the way, I am using my keyboard microphone to do this blog. Not going to talk anymore about this category of biology – still chuckling from dictating the initial word and its corresponding punctuation. 😉
- Multi-annual. I think it’s interesting that the Old Testament prescribes having God’s word read aloud to the congregation once every seven years AND personality development seems to have a seven-year rhythm as well.
So, the parenthetical epilogue to this peek into my mindscape is this: I am going to try to fit some blogging back into life rhythms, in a way that feels healthy and supportive to me.
