I remember when I was a kid, although I don’t remember exactly what age, kinda liking the riding boot look (brown leather, flat soles, very long). Back then, an item like that was far too expensive and too mature for me to consider actually buying, though. Then it slipped from my radar. However, with my birthday coming up soon, I’m wondering if perhaps now is the time to seriously consider investing in a pair. Kinda like these Naturalizer - Women’s Denzel.

Speaking of new things, Carrie is giving away a free personlized children’s book this week at her blog.
Fashion Fit Formula from Mary Beth (aka Miss Kelly), who picked it up from the Boston Globe, saying it reminded her of my Golden Mean Ratio. Does anyone have any experience with this?
Kori at the Fashion-y Blog has a fun idea for a group project. Anybody interested?
One last thing: since I’ve been thinking about costumes, sewing, and so forth, I have been reading Elegant Musings, at Oxanna’s recommendation, I believe. I love the blue walls in her studio! And just the idea of having a studio. Hmmm … I have a room, it just didn’t have a name that stuck. Description: two walls full of hanging space, large desk in the center used for projects, cupboards full of paper and fabrics, etc. Sounds like a studio, doesn’t it?

How to be a Poser
Not poseur. That’s something different.
Vildy and I have decided we need to learn to pose. Here’s what we’ve found:
- Christa Taylor has posted three tips she learned from a model for presenting yourself elegantly in pictures.
- Meg at All About Appearances has done a great series on posing.
And then, if you need a good laugh, there’s this: Look Good in Party Photos. LOL

Lately I’ve been thinking alot about trying some sewing. (See? Ambika of The Fray made herself a fabulous collared cape!) Anyway, for you sewing nerds (what do I say? “seamstresses”? too professional, “sewers”? that’s something else altogether) - readers who sew - what are your favorite sewing blogs?
I haven’t bought myself a book from Amazon yet, but Damselfly at Growing a Life has reviewed Nina Garcia’s Little Black Book of Style.
Do you speak Spanish? If so, you may want to check out the new blog which showed up in my incoming links: FARANDULA, MODA, DEPORTES otra forma de gozar la vida. Then please come back and tell me what it is.
More introductions:
- readers meet Kristie aka Tkmuskrat, Kristie meet readers.
- homeschooling moms (or those interested), check out Such a Time
Finally, I don’t claim to be a beauty expert, but one thing I do believe in spending money on is Bobbi Brown concealer/foundation.Free Bobbi Brown gift with your $85 purchase. Shop NORDSTROM

And now, for some blog introductions:
- Beauty Resource Blog, the purpose of which is to review popular beauty products including make-up, skin care and anything else to make girls look and feel beautiful.
- Aging Fabulous also posts alot on those topics and I highly recommend her post Stop Putting on so Much Perfume! I’m certain all of you are far to considerate to make me eat your fragrance for dinner, if you get my drift.
- DC Goodwill has a fashion blog! (Anyone know where I stumbled on that information? I owe somebody a hat-tip link.) It’s mission: Goodwill’s fashion blog provides detailed knowledge and insight on vintage and contemporary clothing and accessories that are valuable to fashion shoppers. The facts and opinions shared also present readers with entertaining, exciting and value based information on vintage and contemporary fashion and shopping trends. Sounds like us, doesn’t it?
- I don’t mention her very often, but I have read Amy’s Humble Musings consistently from the beginning of my blog-life. She links here simply because I am a regular reader and I have asked her to. If you are a regular reader who would like a link from me, please drop me a line.
Other random linkage:
Liebemarlene is obsessing on ankle boots. Did I tell you there was a pair in one of my recent boxes of grandma treasures? Black with fur trim! After I get the re-heeled, I am really going to wear them. (I highly doubt I’ll strike anyone as an “impossibly chic Carine Roitfeld type”. LOL)
Emily Yoffe goes back-to-school shopping (a link I ran across at MIntheGap). As a mother of daughters there was nothing to earth-shattering to me in the article; the comments, however, were appalling! The first several (as far as I read) defended the sexualization of clothing for pre-teen girls as a normal part of growing up and becoming sexual beings.
But I’m beginning to notice another thought in the back of my highly-tuned-to-modesty mind: is it perhaps appropriate for a wedding dress to be a bit sexy (*gasp!*)?

Speaking of fashion books, I recently received a small payment from my amazon affiliation, in the form of a gift certificate - perhaps enough to buy myself a small paperback. Any recommendations? Perhaps this one:
Wendy also was lovely enough to send me a link, this one to net-a-porter’s gray for fall layout. I’m inspired! But not everybody’s looking forward to a big gray cycle; the last time I brought up gray for fall, Damselfly and Anna both weren’t happy about it. Perhaps a fashion lab combining gray with other colors?
After last week’s Rockin’ event, I just have to mention - Laane plays the bag-pipes, among other instruments. That was a fun question, wasn’t it? Also, a great big thank you to the following blogs for incoming links this week:
Here’s another random thing that’s been on my mind: Hadley Freeman thinks the mid-calf skirt is unflattering. I disagree. What do you think? Does anybody have skirts of both lengths and the willingness to model a fashion lab?
Have a lovely weekend!

Omiru readers believe Bohemian fashion is out, what do you say? Trisha’s tip:
If you love bohemian fashion, wear it in moderation. Pair your hippie-chic tunic with a structured pair of pants. Or wear your flowy dress with a sophisticated handbag and shoes. Oh, and buy it on the cheap–this is a fleeting trend, at best.

Two must-reads at youlookfab:
- how long you can expect white items to last.
- a rundown of the various ladieswear departments at Nordstrom. It appears that fit and price point are more of a factor than style type.
Congratulations are in order:
- to the Fashionable Housewife on the birth of her little darling! If you like precious baby photos, pop on over for a peek!
- to my sister, who landed herself a better job with a huge pay increase! Read about what she wore.
Coming soon:
- I’m ready to start thinking about Back to School. And jeans. Anyone want to volunteer for a fashion lab on any jean-related topics?
- Still plenty for me to sprinkle in from my recent adventures.
- Next Real Fashion for Real People event will be the last week of September.
What’s on your mind these days?

The First Ever Carnival of Modesty
Welcome to the first ever edition of The Carnival of Modesty!
Modest Resources
Annette Berlin presents How to Tie a Head Scarf posted at Crafter’s Journey, saying,
“A headscarf is the easiest type of hat to make. Just hem a rectangular or triangular piece of fabric and you are finished. Here are some fun ways to wear your new fashion accessory.“
Deborah asked if it was alright to submit something by someone else (which it is) saying,
“Can you submit something that belongs to someone else? I came across this collection of blog goodies last night, all having to do with modesty and new trends toward modesty.“
The collection: A Tremor of Modesty and Restraint; posted at I Speak of Dreams. Deborah also gave me a great tip, setting up a google alert for the topic of modesty; as well as her own submission: Moms for Modesty Link and Libby Lou posted at One Beggar’s Bread.
My Story
Sherri Wilkerson presents Cover me, I’m goin’ in… , a funny story that shows that her children “get” what modesty is all about, at a suburban housewife.
Mary at Home-Steeped Hope shares her journey to modesty–from pastor’s kid to newlywed to a mother of three daughters in The Church’s Influence on Modesty and her thought about the first woman to ever inspire her to modesty in Modesty and the Older Woman, and how it’s made her feel responsible to carry on in her tradition.
What is Modest
The next two articles are from Your Sacred Calling:
- Can Pants be Considered Modest?
- Walking Billboards (She saw a girl and her mom in the store– what does their clothing say about them?)
Our carnival’s organizer, MInTheGap, presents Hey, Check Me Out!, part 2 of his modesty series, wondering,
“Is dressing for attention modest?”
More great entries:
ENFORCED MODESTY posted at Word Around the Net: The effect of immodesty is that it desensitizes men to their spouses’ body– says Naomi Wolf.
Who Defines Feminine Modesty?is a great question by Mollie at true womanhood in the new millennium. With 95 responses.
Why dress modestly? Part 1 posted at Unfurling Flower, is part of a great series talking about Why Dress Modestly.
Two entries from the lovely Anna at Veiled Glory:
- Cosmetics- Modest or Immodest?, submitted by MIn, and
- Culture, Clothing, and Modesty, in which she tries to answer the question regarding the cultural relativity of modesty and how that applies to our Western culture.
That concludes this edition. Submit your blog article to the next edition of carnival of modesty:

At the risk of being mocked out of town, oh wait! - I was going out of town anyway, I find myself thinking perhaps my dream of having each hanger in my closet labeled is not so far-fetched after all.
My dream: having a specific spot for each item labeled by lifestyle segment and part of wardrobe. Empty hangers become my shopping list.

Have you heard about Paris Hilton’s jailhouse conversion? I hate to tell you this but … well, I was supposed to be reading The Other Jamestown Party, found via Life in a Shoe, but instead I got sucked into this : Paris Hilton Finds God. This quote was worth it:
How can we tell if Hilton’s conversion is real? With 30 years of working with prisoners, Mark Earley, president of Prison Fellowship, has identified three things that indicate a genuine change of heart: “humility, accountability and involvement in local faith communities over time.”
Humility, accountability, and involvement in local faith communities. We’ll see, won’t we? Over time.
Now in other news:
- My Fashion Life is obsessing over shirt dresses. I concur. If you find a shirt dress that suits your idiom, do not hesitate to snap it up.We, the ladies and I, have been scouting thrift stores for shirt dresses, mainly for them, for over a year. He hee. When my functionally elegant daughter wore one to church a few months back (it was a salmon pink that looked like it could have been current), her friends were all like, “WHAT are you wearing?” It’s awesome!
- And speaking of awesome, Karina also writes for another blog where she posted the most gorgeous trench coats ever. What kind of weather do you think trench coats are suitable for? When I lived in the Portland area, I had a trench with a zip-out lining for my regular coat; here I feel the need for a wool topper. I guess I’m thinking about people travelling to Europe this fall, would one of these be a practical coat to wander into the Chanel boutique in?
- On the topic of what to wear to Europe: here, via the Sartorialist, is a suit that works in my idiom.
Finally, the hilarious Daddy Likey dishes up great advice for short- and/or stocky- legged women in How to Not Look Like a Hobbit. But here’s my question:
Has anyone else noticed how many, shall we say, trendy ladies are wearing a Frodo-like hairdo?
