This late-breaking development: I’ve joined the Old Navy affiliate program. And with the price of gas up to $3.60 per gallon and more, I’m thinking more and more of online shopping. It would cost me about $5 round trip to drive to the nearest Old Navy.
From around the blogosphere:
- Eternal Voyageur has been doing a bra-fitting series, something I will probably never do because a) I’ve never had problems with that, and b) she did it already and you can read hers.
- Illustrated with a $3 square neck top from Marshalls, Tessa posted on retail versus re-sale. I agree there are great deals to be had shopping new, rather than used, especially clearance. And if we are in a recession, I predict an overall shift from thrift to retail in terms of where the bulk of the really good deals are to be had.
- What I miss most about Italy is walking for transportation. While many of you are able to manage that in your life, out here in the Great Northwest it’s mostly impractical. (I say mostly because I know it could be done, but I’m just not into the other changes it would require.) Most of us have to carve out extra time from our schedule to exercise, which recently I have been very poor at. However, reading about Joy taking her bike to the grocery gave me another idea. The question is can I overcome my fear of biking?
- Tricia at bits and bobbins invites readers to consider “why do we wear what we wear?” Don’t miss the comments. Personally I’m still working through these questions, agreeing in large part with Claire who wants to feel happy, beautiful, and different from others and to be comfortable and prepared for what her day entails. I also identify with Ilka who says, “I wear what I wear because I want to seem slightly different from others, but I am not as adventurous on the outside as I am inside, so often I will try on an outfit in my head, but it never makes it out into the real world.” This happens to me all the time. I see two problems: family members who don’t agree with my vision and aren’t afraid to say so (I am easily discouraged), and lifestyle. I mean, where does one go where the only consideration in getting dressed is self-expression?
That’s such a good question, I think I’ll end there. Happy weekend!

Update: Splendicity’s main page today features a never-before published article I wrote about shopping for a dress.
I’m trying out a new little time-saving blogging “device”: rather than try to sort through the many emails I received while I was gone (those that made it through the filter, that is), I am going to just post the links here. If there is something that is helpful to you or you think is fun, let me know.
- Need super-cute pjs? Capri Rose has a new etsy shop.
- Jennifer Taylor recommends Chick-eez for modesty.
- A Reuters fashion humor blog?
- Children’s Orchard, a children’s clothing resale shop.
- Weardrobe, a new social platform for wardrobe organization.
- Shop It To Me is a free discount-notification service for stylish clothing. This I may have to try out myself.
- Have you seen My It Things yet? I found this quote in an article in their fashion section:
Shopping alone is a whole different animal than shopping with those friends of yours who always have comments -good or bad- on what you pick out to try on and buy. Sometimes I feel like one of those paper dolls from when I was little when my buddies try to “help” by picking out outfits for me.
A pet peeve of mine: ladies who compel their less “fashionable” ( less interested? less trendy?) friends to go shopping with them for the sole purpose of dressing them up, cookie-cutter style, in unsuitable outfits. Off soapbox.

On the topic of silhouette, Chantelle sends in this comment:
The Body Shape Bible over complicates for the sake of offering something different i feel. As a stylist I have always believed that there are simply 5 female body forms, the most common being the rectangle. In fact I have created a website which profiles your body shape and provides you specific style advice to suit… it’s an automated personal stylist service and simplifies the entire ‘what body shape am i question’.
I tend to agree about the 5 basic body shapes, although I do still prefer to distinguish between the hourglass and figure eight. But I never would have guessed the rectangle as the most common! Perhaps that explains my persistent attempts over the years to stuff my rounded shape into that linear silhouette. Am I the only one who has always subconsciously considered the pencil the ideal female shape?
Have a lovely weekend!

My Beliefs
Just in case you were wondering what kind of a Christian I am: I am this kind NOT this kind. And I do believe in prayer.
Makeup
I admit I am aging. With age comes the opportunity to change what I do in terms of decorating my face. Lately I have been enjoying adding as much reflectivity as seems dignified; no glitter, but plenty of gleam. Powder blush has got to go.
In my search for a product that can be used as both blush and lipstick, I found this All Over Color Stick in Pink Lemonade from E.L.F. While it may not end up being my favorite blush - it’s a good color but a little sticky - it’s a fabulous lip color for me. And at $1 a pop, or lemonade as the case may be, I can afford to have one in my purse, one in my makeup kit, one in my pocket …
Shopping Clearance
It pays to learn the clearance practices at your favorite stores. For example, Macy’s takes markdowns at the end of each month, which means some stuff has been reduced since last weekend. And just in case you aren’t getting out of the house this weekend, but prefer to do your shopping online:
Spokane Friends
Would anyone like some help going through their closet? It’s one of my favorite hobbies. I even haul away the junk.
Wendy sent an email picturing a bunch of balloon creations. Some even look like clothes!
There’s a bit of the randomness from my mind, what’s on yours?

MyShape
Joy has tested out MyShape.com and found their service to be both helpful and affordable. From her post:
I ordered a white blouse, a pair of pants, a denim skirt and a long sleeve shirred tee. Total price after discount, $73.
I’m intrigued and impressed!
Update: I’m an S. Who knew?
Color Palettes
Lloyd Boston recommends a concept he terms “identify your life palette”, that is, basing your wardrobe on the colors you just naturally love. If you aren’t certain about yours, you may find inspiration at wear palettes, a blog with a stunningly simple premise: taking The Sartorialist’s photos and extrapolating the color palettes (hat tip: Julie). I haven’t worked my way through the entire thing, but here’s one palette that works for me: white, pink, army, brown. Don’t spend all day there - well, I guess you can if you want - but do tell us if you find one inspiring.
Today’s Social Events
Speaking of inspiration, am I the only one who likes to coordinate my outfit thematically to a show I am going to see? Today’s outfit (worn also to MOPS this morning): well-worn jeans tucked into my flat boots (normally I’d wear heels, but I’m still babying my back), white button-up shirt trimmed with ruffles, with my brown paisley velvet blazer. Feeling rather like the dread pirate Rebecca, somehow I did not feel too costumey to be seen in public. Care to guess what movie we’re going to? Or buy the theme song, by my favorite band?
What’s on your agenda for this weekend?

Boy, am I behind the times! Carrie’s got her own domain now, go check out the new Life is Like a Mountain Railway and see the progress of her spending freeze (and the coming addition!).
I also want to introduce Karen, who blogs at Mommy Gets Dressed, the real life wardrobe journal of a mostly stay-at-home mom of toddlers.
While I was over there lamenting with her about the time it takes to shop, the subject of online shopping came up. Which leads me to announcing the shoes.com monthly Saturday sale. I am, however, waiting for these.
Have a great weekend!

News:
This Saturday is the big, monthly Shoes.com Saturday Sale.
And Monday the Fabulous Festival is here!
Around the blogosphere:
Sallie sent this in -
Our local Christian radio station (KCFY) has won 2 years running Christainwebcast.coms People’s Choice Award and are in the running for winning an unprecedented 3rd year in a row. I thought it would be interesting for my blog and so I did an interview with the general manager (plus our kids LOVE everyone who works there)!
If you go to the blog and leave a comment, I’m having a drawing for a prize package that will last until Monday at midnight. All you have to do is leave a comment with your name and email blocks filled in .. at least that much so I know who you areThis is a great chance for you to pick up some info about the station that you didn’t know before and there’s even a great blooper story!!
The prize package is a great devotional book and 2-CD Christian music package. Hope you all can go look … thanks!
Also in my inbox today: Simply Charlotte Mason is having a photo contest. I promise you I will not be entering it, but some of you are quite good photographers.
And now, a riveting question for you: at what age would you hope/expect young people to be grown up, capable of making their own decisions and being responsible for at least themselves?
I’m noticing that, while we have, I think successfully, charted a course aimed at age 18, many of my friends appear to be on a different timeline. A longer one.
