Me, looking not as chic as yesterday, with Leon and Jill from The Lesson Factory, Eugene OR. If you decide to come to this event, Jill’s outfit is a real “do”.

More on Leon’s later.

Live Blogging from Creationfest

Rebecca | blogging | Thursday, 26 July 2007

035.JPGLive blogging.  It’s not what I thought it would be.  For one, there’s no internet available on-site.

Creation Festival Northwest is a camping event, but since my parents live less than an hour away I am able to stay at their house (good food, nice showers, lovely lakeside accomodations). My computer will stay here too.

Yesterday may well be the sweatiest day of my life.

The first night line-up was awesome: Hawk Nelson, Superchick, worship leader Phil Wickham, speaker Justin Lookadoo (yes, that is his real name), Jars of Clay, and Relient K. Followed by late night comedy by Nazareth.

Fashion topics I want to get back to:

  • Hawks:  mo-, faux, and Nelson
  • Wearing white!
  • Har-de, Har, Hars of Clay
  • and more

Notice my new bag?  I probably paid too much for it; $15 at the thrift store.  I know little about it:  the exterior looks great; the interior has very little wear but doesn’t look especially high quality; the label says: genuine leather, made in Brazil, and Guy Laroche.  But it’s terribly practical!  One, when using a public restroom, or “honey bucket” like we have at Creation, the little bag part can sit right on my lap.  Two, when I was down in the front of the floor for Relient K last night, I had this little extra breathing space created by having the bag right in front of me.  He hee.

More later.

Where I’ve Been and Where I’m Going

Rebecca | modesty, blogging, events | Monday, 23 July 2007

Many thanks to everyone who participated in the conversation during my week of “vacation” (I was really working very hard as kitchen staff at a Christian camp). Next up: Creation Festival 2007 at the Gorge Amphitheater (no - that doesn’t say “arm pit heater”, although it will be hot!), overlooking the Columbia River at George, WA.

What to wear to a music festival … ? As cute as the dresses are that Liebemarlene pictures, I will most likely be wearing something more similar to what I wore to church at the beach, but with better shoes. (I will probably even take the hat: it is cotton, so I can get it wet to keep my head cool.)

Being a Christian music festival, I was delighted to notice that Creationfest has a dress code, which I have copied for you here from their website.

DRESS CODE

Leaders, Chaperones and Parents: We need your help in enforcing this policy — our staff cannot do it alone! MODESTY is the key word. While the style and fashion these days seems to be “less is best,” we do not want to be guilty of causing another person to stumble. Girls: Bathing suits are NOT permitted, except in the showers. Clothes must be put on over your bathing suit for the walk back to your campsite from the showers. Tank tops are fine but bellies must be covered (even though the fashion now is to show it off). Shorts and/or skirts need to be long enough and shirts big enough. Guys are not exempt from the dress code: SHIRTS (and shoes) MUST be worn by all at all times.

Lord willing, and technology cooperating, I will be live-blogging from the event, with an emphasis on what the attendees are wearing. Thankfully, the Creation Fest promoters are more sensible about issuing press passes to bloggers than the organizers of San Francisco Fashion Week.

Are any of you going? Tickets are still available. If you are, let’s get our picture taken together!

Real Fashion for Real People! Icy’s Formal Work Outfit

One of the things I love about blogging is getting a more global point of view. Like remembering that, just because it’s 100 degrees here, doesn’t mean that’s the case everywhere. Elsewhere, like Australia where Icy is, it’s winter.

(BTW, did you know that in Australia the best coffee is made with a plunger?!?!?)

On to Icy’s Real Fashion for Real People entry:
icys-work-formal-outfit.JPG

Personal Style: Somewhere between Alternative and Contemporary.

Lifestyle: Work formal (what I call “business”).

What follows is Icy’s description of each piece. On her own blog, she posted a few additional thoughts about the way the pieces go together.

Bottom: My best black high-waisted pants from Cue.

Top: Maroon and black striped shirt from Ojay, black vest from Target, maroon tie from Rivers.

Shoes: Black cowperson boots made somewhere in Georgia (the Baltic state rather than the United one).  cowperson?  lol

Thanks so much to Icy for participating!  You’re too clever!

The Most Entertaining Carnival Post Ever

Rebecca | Real Fashion for Real People, blogging, frugal | Tuesday, 10 July 2007

Not here. It’s The Festival of Frugality over at Ask Mr Credit Card.

It was just a random thing that I happened to post an extreme frugal blog entry on Monday this week, and then remember that Mondays are the deadline for the Festival of Frugality. I’m so glad I did. Go see what he did; I’ve never seen anything like it, but it makes me think we bloggers can challenge ourselves to be creative.

Speaking of a challenge to be creative, there’s still time for you to send in a Real Fashion for Real People entry.

What is RSS and Why is Nordstrom Offering It?

Rebecca | just tips, blogging | Wednesday, 04 July 2007

RSS stands for ‘Really Simple Syndication’. That definition is about as helpful as ‘a blog is an online journal’. At the risk of making us all feel stupid, with this post I will attempt to explain it like I would if you were a friend here in my living room. Oh wait, you are a friend here in my living room.

You have to use a reader to get RSS feeds. Readers automatically search for new postings from all of your RSS subscriptions — then, when you want to, you log into your reader to read all or some of them. Bloglines and Google Reader are two I have used, they are both easy to sign up for and use. And, yes, they are free.

If you read a large number of blogs, using a reader makes it much quicker. If this is the only blog you read, it could still be quicker to use a reader - it lifts the content out of the “wrapper” here, thereby removing most of the slow-loading elements.

See this orange box?

The orange box is the RSS icon. If you click on it, you should get a page where you can select the reader you wish to use to subscribe to the blog.

Now, as to why Nordstrom is offering RSS, it’s a customer service. You can now subscribe to one of their feeds and have new items “delivered” to your RSS reader. Unfortunately it does not appear that you can subscribe to a search; for example, I just tried to subscribe to all 70% off items that come in size 2 and was told there was no feed. Oh well.

Was this helpful at all?

Blogspotted!

Rebecca | Spokane, just linking, blogging, sales and announcement | Monday, 18 June 2007

The Space Between My Peers made the local newspaper.

Frank Sennett, who writes the Spokesman Review’s Blogspotter column, featured this blog in his column this week. And he didn’t make me sound stupid (thanks, Frank!) The funny thing is, it didn’t even occur to me until after I had done the email interview that perhaps it was for the newspaper and not just for online. He hee.

Then a real life friend sent the nicest email and said she learned something about me from the newspaper. Hey, bloggers, here’s a question for you: do all your RLFs know you blog? How did you tell them?

Features and Festivals

Rebecca | blogging | Tuesday, 05 June 2007

First, a quick update on my inspiration for Teen Style Tuesdays. I realize now that my thinking was muddy because I hadn’t clearly identified whom I was addressing. For now, I plan to address my daughters’ peers in these Tuesday posts (but not to exclude anyone). So, ladies (my young friends), if you manage to find your way here, by invitation or via facebook, you are invited to contribute a picture of an outfit. :)

Next, the current edition of the fabulous! festival, including my post on using Accessories to Anchor Attention Around Your Face, is up at iCiNG. Thanks, Gala Darling!

Also, I wrote my recent post on gas prices especially for the Festival of Frugality, which is currently up at My Two Dollars. As usual, Jenn at Frugal Upstate (who’s hosting next week) has combed through the entries and posted highlights.

Finally, I am still debating with myself regarding this Friday’s Fashion Lab. But in the future, perhaps when I’m on vacation this summer, I’d like to do a “Real Fashion for Real People” project, as suggested by Alyson:

Using things that all of us wear, that we can afford, from places we actually shop, and for the lifestyle that we really have. What if you did this with each of the style types from your quiz? Have a volunteer from each style type work up an outfit or two from each lifestyle segment that they have - the only rule is that is had to come from someplace like the mall, Gap, Target, Ross, Kohl’s, thrift, eBay, etc. Just no major designer pieces that break the bank.

Please, whether you know for sure your style personality or not, consider volunteering for this event to be published mid-July. More to come!

Just Linking: June 1, 2007

Rebecca | just linking, blogging | Thursday, 31 May 2007

I’m putting this post up now so I can tell you the late-developing technical news:

  1. I am unable to upload the wonderful pictures Dana sent in for this week’s fashion lab. Still working on it.
  2. Friend just phoned. He’s on his way over here with his old/our new computer.  We still need an Operating System for it.

The fabulous! festival appears Monday at Gala Darling’s blog.  In the meantime, here’s some weekend reading:

When dressing for an interview, dress a bit nicer than the company’s employees.

  • Since my hero works in the engineering and architecture field, it was fun to see the suggestions that Tricia at Omiru.com had for interviewing in a casual office (although I think she means technology engineering as opposed to structural engineering).

And this cartoon at bonnie’s blog has nothing to do with getting dressed. Or does it?

Let’s Party at the Fabulous! Festival

Rebecca | blogging | Tuesday, 22 May 2007

This week’s Fabulous! Festival of fashion, beauty, and style is up at Individual Chic. Next week the Festival will be here, so get those submissions coming in!

Here’s what’s up, via The Bargain Queen, the festival’s originator and official calendar-keeper:

Each week, a different blog hosts the carnival. Bloggers send a link to their best article for the week to the hosting blogger. The blogger who’s hosting it collates all the submissions into a big link round-up, so readers can find all the best content for the last week in one place.

Submissions are due this Friday, topic of your choice. Just enter your information on the BlogCarnival form (I promise, it’s really easy); the categories of posts to be included are: beauty, fashion, personal style, and shopping.

Come back Monday to read them all!
