Summer 2014 shopping list

On days when I am hiking, gardening, or some other great Northwest outdoor activity; my uniform template consists of shorts and T-shirt. Not a boring shorts and T-shirt: I love pattern mixing! If I need to conduct business, on the way to my activity or on the way back home, I can add a blazer, as seen in these pictures from last week. This segment of my life comprises approximately two or three days per week.

When I was getting dressed to go hiking this day, I thought I needed full shoes; these navy Olibertes were the only ones I had. Since then they died (that is another story). But I realized when I was getting dressed that I didn’t have a navy belt – the one pictured here is black – and I think I need one. In addition to mixing patterns, I really like to repeat colors within an outfit.

Parenthetically, after publishing these pictures, I don’t think I like the blazer on me. It is, perhaps, too stiff? And not colorful enough?

My updated list:

  1. Navy leather jeans belt. One of the things I noticed when I was costuming was that I know where to go for what I need to find – quickly and at a good price – I just don’t always do it. For a basic belt at a good price, especially one with shiny hardware, I will check mens at the department stores. Shop the coolest summer accessories for men at NORDSTROM. Free shipping & returns.
  2. Hair-colored athletic shoes (low priority – I can hike in my tacos Chaco’s. Lol. Can you tell I am using voice texting to blog? ;))
  3. One or two casual dresses: check thrift, Plato’s Closet, and maybe the mall department stores. (Or perhaps online, as I just noticed this: Pick Your Shade of NEW Bobbi Brown Foundation Stick w/ $75 purchase at macys.com! Offer valid until 6/29!
  4. White t-shirts with style (I have one and one will not last long)
  5. White blazer or jacket there is one in the “projects” tote

Sticking to the schedule I created for myself, even if it means I cannot be as thorough as I would like on some aspects as the project, is really helping. I have dresses and shorts outfits hanging in my closet, just waiting for the 80 degree weather promised for later on in the week. Although technically I am shopping next week and doing alterations the following; in reality, I can start both anytime. 🙂

  1. You’re cute as a button in that first pic. You’re right and something does get lost in pic 2. Was trying to figure out if it were jacket length and/or shape. Try Pinterest: women’s shorts suit. Maybe something on there will jump out at you about what kind of jacket will work better.

    1. Thanks! I have been enjoying Pinterest but I am still getting used to it. Haven’t used search much.

Lol. Last night, for the purpose of identifying body type, I had the hero take pictures of me wearing shape-revealing clothes from front, side, and back. That was quite the revelation! In my mind, I was still the skeletal/moulded statue pictured in TToIS; clearly, that is no longer the case. From the side, in some of the photos I had a double chin! And from the back, although my waist looked tiny, my arms – of all things! – looked fat! So the fabric is definitely stiff.

But, something else, the collar is a bit small and straight. I do love a big, wide, pointy lapel. 🙂

      1. You look trim in my eyes. You also always look, in pictures, like you have a nice strong chin/jaw line and maybe a longish neck? Anyway, the jacket pictured looks too retro/twee to me, when you always look beautifully fit and athletic. I was trying to figure out what collar shape suited long neck but also double chin and it’s not my strong suit. I was thinking of a stand collar but then maybe collarless for the other, so I bewildered myself. How would you do, though, in a very modern/contemporary jacket, maybe something in tailored suiting fabric but closed with a zipper?

What about scrunching sleeves to match the fact that shorts show a lot skin? Or maybe
a jacket with actual 3/4 sleeves or even one of those newfangled sleeveless jackets? I don’t honestly know the difference between a sleeveless tailored jacket and a collared and lapelled vest – maybe just degree of roominess?

I don’t pin things on pinterest at all. Seems like too much of a bother to me. I use it the same way I use Google Image search. I open up the site and type what I’d like to see examples of in the little lozenge at top left.

      2. any inspiration here?

Shorts are longer length than what you’re sporting but some are shown with jackets.
Within that post, she links to a Tommy Hilfiger shorts suit that shows contrast trim on jacket, but also wider trim, paler lapel, visible bright jacket inside hem.

About proportion – if your shorts were a mini-skirt, what jacket length/shape would you put with it?

        1. Looking at that jacket hanging in my closet this morning, I was thinking : what if I cut the sleeves off and made it a short-sleeved jacket?

  2. I actually really love that length of short; I prob’ly should keep that in mind. Although it is a different (dressier) look from what I would wear to go hiking and such. I especially like the blue/red mixed print look! And the orangy Tommy Hilfiger short suit. 🙂

Proportion-wise, I think hip-length but curved would be better for me. He hee. Shopping! 🙂
