Spring 2009 Fashion Trends

The sun is out today!  While it’s still too cold to go without silk skivvies, it’s timely for me to pose the question:

Which of glamour.com’s most wearable Spring 2009 trends should Frugal Mom adopt?

And to share my thoughts, one word style:

  • zipper accents:  pass
  • relaxed fit pants:  wait (or should I say “weight”?)
  • sophisticated trench:  invest
  • hot pink:  finally!
  • oversize necklaces:  sprinkles  (as in, if you already have the cake and the frosting and you want more …)
  • black-on-white print:  perfect
  • oversize pattern bag:  beach
  • big bangles:  annoying
  • touch of neon:  young
  • mix-and-match patterns:  doable
  • pastel suit:  Easter
  • sequins:  strategically
  • Sergeant Pepper jacket:  caution
  • color-blocking:  boring
  • 80s flair:  inevitable
  • embellished boho:  specific  (as in, if it’s you, it’s you; if not, it’s tired)

I’ve highlighted my favorites.  Clearly, much more can be said.  Are any of these looks on your shopping list this season?

  1. I love your one-word comments.

Spring is hard for me. I don’t think I look good in pastels. So, black and white are “in” for spring? I’ll have to look into that. But hot pink, I love and always have. If I had a signature color, that would be it (but right now it’s orange).

What does hot pink go with in spring ’09? And how can I make black and white look spring-y?

  2. I don’t know about zipper accents per se, but a little bit of biker chic suits me fine (and early spring will find me wearing my black Frye Harness boots). I do have an oversized bag, but not in a pattern — in a great yellow. Hot pink: you betcha!! (Also strong turquoise.)

No pastels or Sargeant Pepper jacket. Colour blocking only if I find just the right thing!

  3. Last year I was loving black and white – it seems so fresh for spring – but it surprised me a little to see it on the list. I like black and white instead of black or white, to set off a color that looks good. I still have this memory stuck in my head from about 10 years ago: a friend with very soft coloring, gray hair, out in the sun wearing black and white and glamorous sunglasses, with pink lipstick. It was the way the black and white made the pink lips pop that looked so gorgeous! I keep thinking about trying to replicate the look.

For you, Jennifer, what about accenting black and white with hot pink? The other color that I think might be fun is bright yellow. Does that look good on you?

Hot pink shares alot of color properties with red, so that could give you some ideas on combining it. (Sheri doesn’t like apple green and pink, but I do. I just don’t wear it, because it feels too young for me.) I also want to suggest hot pink with purples.

Wendy, for some reason, probably associated with pockets, my hero actually likes the whole crazy zipper look – though, thankfully, he doesn’t wear it – so it makes me nervous. Subtly or classically done, like a touch of biker chic, is great. And I agree with you about color-blocking, too, it can be done just right. I guess I’m just not ready for a return to the worst of 80s style. Somebody needs to remind me what was good back then! Oh yeah, pencil skirts and cinched waists.

  4. Hot pink looks lovely with warm brown. Look at the model’s hair against the pink.

Can’t wait to see your black-on-white print. Even black-and-grey-on-white print could stand-in for the LBD.

I really thought the sundress shown with the oversize bag was lovely.

  5. I’ll take the necklaces – that’s me anyhow. I’m not sure I want some as big as the sample, but something like that might work.

And instead of the sequins, I would do beading. I’ve fallen in love with beading…

I’ll do some pastels, but I like bolder colors just because they match my high contrast skin & hair.

    Thanks for the links.

  6. I also think the very adventurous could pair it with red. And I am not certain I’ll ever get around to getting a black and white print, lovely idea that it is (gray would be great in it too!).

Pretty sundresses are on my radar for summer. 🙂

Janel, I find the idea and the look of beading intriguing. Is it impossibly difficult to do?

  7. Boy, I don’t see much on this list that is calling my name. I would wear a nice black-and-white print if I found one secondhand–it would remind me of the wonderful pique shift dresses my mother wore in the 70s!–but I wouldn’t spend big money on it. Hot pink is horrid on me, although I admire it on others!

Rebecca, I don’t actually dislike pink and apple green–but I would never, never wear that color combination myself. To me it looks so young, it actually seems juvenile, like Peter Pan collars or big bows: primarily for under-18s or for the self-consciously cute. My daughter has a sundress in a hot pink, lime green, and peach print–great on a 5yo!

  8. Yeah, that’s pretty much my feeling too. I’m kinda sad about it, because I actually really like the colors together, especially in some of the lively (groovy) prints. It might work for Jennifer, because she has a different style personality from either of us.

Oh well, if there’s not much for you this season, you get to keep more of your money. 🙂

  9. So hot pink and black/white isn’t too 80’s? Or maybe if it is that’s a good thing. 🙂

I had a revelation looking at the b/w dress in that Glamour slide show… if it has more white, it’s more spring/summer looking, more black makes it fall/winter.

I have a wonderful, gigantic black patent flat tote that I’d like to keep using for spring. So that’s why I’m interested in black/white. But I was thinking light grey too would be more spring/summer.

  10. Euurrgghh the pastel suit – something I hate and that is so old lady!

Love hot pink – though with your colouring Rebecca – not for you (sorry).

Black and white – also not for you – but charcoal and off white you can go for.

  11. Sometimes it’s the quality of the fabric (and dye) that make a colour beautiful. If you can’t wear hot pink, a bright (but not primary) like turquoise or lime (not neon) green really picks up a neutral outfit for spring.

I’m with Imogen on the pastel suit: caution! Has to be really high quality to not look cheap. I have seen some incredible soft, pale yellow suits at Max Mara, for example… but they cost a mint and then there’s the cleaners.

  12. I LOVE the black on white dress ~ so vintage chic! I would NOT wear most of these except for the trench (which I bought in red last spring) and hot pink. I need to get a hot pink shell to wear under jackets this spring!
