My Simplified Summer

It wasn’t retail therapy, but this past Saturday I found myself alone downtown on other business, a few blocks from the mall, with a few hours to spare. As I was in need of some shoes with better support, Nordstrom was my destination; and lo and behold – it was the half-yearly sale!!!

In the course of painting sets for the show we are involved with, my Chacos met their demise (or at least the long-awaited demotion). Now they are hiking sandals. When I need to look respectable, I will be wearing these:

(Unfortunately my size was not in stock, they should arrive tomorrow … at which time I will know how much I paid for them. he hee. I know they were on sale.)

My simplified summer color palette:

  • white
  • coral pinks: icy pale to bright to almost-red coral
  • accent: dark brown

My simplified summer shoe wardrobe:

  • leisure: Chacos
  • casual: the pictured Sofft Adara dark brown patent wedges
  • business: I don’t need business shoes
  • social: dark brown vintage lizard peep-toe slingbacks

All are dark brown. I have a belt, now I just need to decide on a purse.

My simplified summer uniform templates:

  • leisure: I’m still working on this one, but could it be anything but shorts and tee?
  • casual: after working downtown for two days, I am firmly decided on this one – short-sleeved pants, aka bermudas + short-sleeved shirt + removable jacket. I am just so much more comfortable in pants than in skirts.
  • business: I don’t need business clothes. Honestly, out here in the West, business casual is pretty much good for everything.
  • social: sleeveless sheath. I have two black and one pink, and I wouldn’t mind making myself another, perhaps a print. I also have permission to raid the fabulous skirt wardrobe of one of my daughters. 🙂

What are you wearing this summer?

  1. heh. Back away from the Chacos. She’s right – somebody who looks like she has delicate bones isn’t well-served by those Chacos – they don’t even look ironic.

How my summer look is shaping up: lots of deep strong saturated pastels and midtones. Today my husband asked my son to accompany me to the town square to get the prescription that was phoned in by the doctor while he himself was on his way home on public transportation. Son came with me but said I was perfectly safe since I looked like a clown and they wouldn’t bother me except to make them balloon animals. Clownwear, he calls it. 🙂

For the record I had on a new thin poly (silk look alike) camp shirt and loose knee length skirt in deep glowing orchid (the color glowed, not the fabric) and over that I had a thin shirt jacket that had a stylized frond print in washed out pastels that looked like the kind of homemade paper kids make in art camp. Silk blend jacket $5 at the IOS catalog closeout sale, skirt and blouse thrifted this morning for 50 cents apiece and matching silky pants thrown in free when it was observed they were discolored along the fold lines – came out with foamy dawn.

So I’m going for definite color but one step below brights. The jacket only works for me with a deeper, more emphatic color put with it.

And, separately, I seem to be acquiring more denim: jeans, jumper, tricked out jean jackets.

  2. lol … I don’t know that I’d put too much stock in a negative comment from offspring. When they compliment, though … 🙂

But Angie did say I could still wear my Chacos for hiking and painting sets. (She wisely said they were “gear” and could be worn wherever “gear” is needed.) And she approved of the Soffts, which I am wearing now. They were $77.90 on sale.

Shoes are the one thing I AM willing to part with real money for.
