A Modern Take on a Classic Combo: Navy, Grey & Pink

Ack! – I have a ton of stuff I want to post about! I guess that’s a good thing.

Credit goes to Emily for creating this fresh spring palette, in response to a suggestion from Karen. Personally, I am loving the grey! Although I haven’t gone that direction in my wardrobe yet, it’s the gray (yes, I did that on purpose) which has always resonated with me; very crisp and clean. (Which reminds me of this article Vildy sent in about people who only wear one color. She and another person both commented that the grey/silver/pewter wardrobe was the only wearable one.)

Covering dark and light, warm and cool, clear and muted, this palette has it all. What would you have to add or change in order to wear it?

I might trade the cantaloupe for a candy pink, or else swap the ivory for white. I guess that moves it a little more toward the cool side, doesn’t it?

  1. On the other hand, it’s a great way for someone with warm coloring to be able to wear the navy and grey. And if I put the grey and ivory together it would be a rough approximation of my hair color. lol

  2. It’s a lovely neutral palette, and I can visualize lots of people for whom it would be just wonderful. I could make it work by brightening the pink and strengthening the gray — but I suspect this spring I am going to be drawn by brights more than neutrals.

  3. Interpreting the navy as dark wash denim makes this a viable palette for me. I’m picturing straight leg dark wash jeans, a white tank layered over a (slightly longer) pink one, and a short sleeved gray cardigan on top. Shoes could be silver heels for a slightly dressier look, or espadrilles for casual.

    *sigh*
    Why isn’t it spring yet?

  4. I would definitely change the “cantaloupe” for a pink just b/c I think I look nasty in orange and any colors in that family. But that’s just me.

I’m loving Emily’s outfit. Except the cardigan makes too many layers for me. Can we say “hot”?! (Sorry all, it’s practically summer here.) Here’s something I’ve always wondered that may be more appropriate to discuss closer to summer…How do you pull off a pulled together look with minimal layers? I love the look of casual jackets, cardis, etc, but they aren’t really practical for me (at least every day).

  5. I’m sure we will talk about that as we get closer to summer, and I’m sympathetic to how it is for you “southern” gals. It seems we did talk about it once before, but I also have another crazy idea: short-sleeved white button-up shirts. Every day. I am seriously tempted to buy several and just wear them with my short-sleeved pants every day next summer. (Or everyday I’m not wearing a skirt and tank top.) Maybe that’s just too far out. 🙂

  6. I absolutely love short sleeved, collared button downs… so cute! I’m already eyeing a few for spring/summer… plus they’re great in the chilly Canadian winter under long sleeved sweaters (I don’t know about everybody else, but I find that layering a button down with sleeves below the elbow under a sweater results in hard-to-bend arms)

Jenna: I think accessories are key to looking pulled together with minimal layers… shoes & bag of course, but also belts, statement jewellery, hair accessories. To make my outfit idea more summer-y, I would keep the cardi (in a very fine gauge, mind you), wear just a white tank, trade the jeans for dark denim skirt, and wear a pink scarf in my hair, or as a belt. I might add a coordinating brooch to the scarf for extra jazz.
