Flats for Winter

Flat dress boots are the ballet flats of winter. I had never really considered that before I got thinking recently about dcrmom being interested in some flat boots.imgp4518.JPG

In my idiom, ballet flats have never been a staple (a bit too romantic). Whenever moccasin-style flats have been big, though, I’ve worn them until I’ve worn them out. On the left in this picture are the flats I finally found this time around (and my daughter’s – maybe she should just wear those if she can’t find a dress to go with her evening gown).

Bandolino - Jordana (Dark Brown Leather) - Women'sHave I mentioned that there is a really good chance I will be traveling to Italy this winter? Not for pleasure, or for blogging business, but to help a friend who is moving there. And I had been seriously wondering what I was going to wear on my feet, until I decided to buy some riding type boots with my birthday money.

Just in case you decide you want the same boots I got – and I don’t mind a bit if you do – let me advise you that I bought a full size smaller than I normally would, although there isn’t alot of room in them for thick socks. That’s okay, I wear bamboo.

And, in case you can’t see yourself wearing the same boots I got, here are some others, all except the first ones are under $200 (pictures are links to Zappos):
Ugg - Liberty (Cigar) - Women's
An Ugg more shapely than most, the styling on the Liberty may be too western for some.
Aerosoles - Tint Cess (Black Leather) - Women's
Did you know that Aerosoles makes boots? From what I’ve heard about the comfort of Aerosoles, these may be the boots worth investing in.
Nine West - Samella (Medium Natural Suede) - Women's

These are really soft and comfy looking. Like maybe too soft and comfy looking, would you feel like you were walking around in your slippers? The color, though, is a refreshing change and would be great on someone with reddish or strawberry blond hair.
Circa Joan & David - Fresh (Black) - Women's

Now, if you aren’t planning on tucking your jeans into your boots, it doesn’t really matter if they are tall or short, does it?
Natural Comfort - Katiee (Purple Suede) - Women's

Hey, some people just don’t want anything ordinary.

  1. Okay, I’m still looking for boots. I like the Nine West ones, until I looked at the view from the back. It’s so shapeless and unflattering, I think. I hate how the foot is small and then they widen as they go up the leg.

I tried on similar ones at Nine West that I expected to love, and I thought they were so ugly on. For the same reason.

Now, the UGGs you picture, I love, but hello, $258. Ouch. And I ask you this, are you wearing these tall boots over skinny jeans? B/c that’s what I want, something to wear over jeans.

I have these on my Christmas List.

I actually think they’re cute on. And OH SO COMFY. But I fear they are too UGG-ish, and I’m getting kind of sick of seeing UGGs. All of the sudden they are EVERYWHERE. It’s nauseating.

So yeah, still looking. I welcome any suggestions you might have! I rather like the looks of these. But again, the price. YEOW.

  2. You’re right about the price of the Uggs. I don’t know why I thought they were less expensive.

The intricacies of the shapes of boots mystifies me a bit. Like what you mention about the ones where the foot is small and they widen as they go up. I suspect some of our likes and dislikes relate to the basic shape of our own bodies. For example, I have never really liked boots that are wide around the ankle, on me, but I don’t mind them on others.

No, the ones I bought are not for tucking. Because I have wide calves, and I bought a small size, I don’t know that they would fit. I’ve considered taking some old jeans or capris and cutting them off so there’d be less to tuck in, but honestly, tucking is not long-term in my idiom. Last year, I wore jeans tucked into my high-heeled suede boots, but when I did it once this year I felt too … last year. I suppose I should try it with flat boots once and just see …

I have always thought Uggs and Ugg-style boots like the ones on your list are pretty ugly and look like slippers. They kinda grow on me, so the ugly part doesn’t bother me as much anymore, but I’m sure you’re right – with them being everywhere, it’s a look that’s swiftly growing tired.

I LOVE the nine west buckup, I can’t imagine anybody ever getting tired of them. I’d watch for them to go on sale, like the sale I found at Macy’s. Also, the price on the Nine West web-site is quite a bit less. I am going to revise this post to picture those!

This was kind of a messy reply. Sorry! 🙂

  3. I need boot advice for Next Time.

This time (early fall) I bought a pair of Ecco flat boots with a nice buckle detail. Very comfortable! (I have good luck with Ecco shos & my feet). Sadly, in a few months time, they’ve gone saggy and wrinkly around the ankle — making my legs look dumpy instead of long and lean and equestrian. This is with storing them flat in their original box with their original packing material — think boot trees for the cheap. Point being, I have babied those boots and they have viciously turned on me!

Anyhow, I’m so bummed about these flat boots. Any advice on brands or styles or what to look for in a flat boot that holds its shape around the ankle????

  4. Linn – that’s such a disappointment. Can you return them? Many better stores will let you, even if they pro-rate the time you’ve had them.

As far as recommendations, I don’t have alot of experience, but my 30 year old suede boots that I still wear all the time are Clarks. I store them standing up, with boot trees in them.

    Anybody else?

Meg – don’t feel bad. It may even turn out that our plans change. And I’ll still be happy about the boots. 🙂

  5. Nice boots, Christie!

Have you considered wearing knee socks with them? I love the look of a contrasting knit cuff at the top, but don’t do it often because I do have large calves. You could also wear leg-warmers. My thought is the main problem with gapping would be they may not hold their shape as well.

Let me know how it works out. 🙂

  6. Good ideas. I’ll let you know what I think of them.

I had not thought of a problem with holding their shape, but that is good to consider when I try them on.
