Extreme Closet Restructuring

I might have called it a makeover, but I’m not doing anything physical (not even painting).

Awhile ago I mentioned a wardrobe organization dream I’ve had: to have every hanger labeled with it’s “part of wardrobe”. Since then, I’ve actually been working on the project, little by little, learning ALOT.

  • Functionally some of my clothes just aren’t what they should be. For example, what good is a pastel cotton twinset that isn’t long enough to wear with white linen short-sleeved pants?
  • Other things, primarily those with ruffles or gathers, have to be moved to a different lifestyle segment.
  • I am hurtin’ for certain for fall (I’m okay for jeans, it’s tops and layers I need). More on that to come, for sure!

Here’s the process:

  1. Dividing my clothing by lifestyle segment, my dresser will eventually house all my leisure clothing.
  2. In my closet (pictured here), the area directly in front of the door is reserved for my casual clothes; less used social items are in the far back, business clothing, uniforms, and my racks of skirts are just to the left of the door, where I have to dig for them a little.
  3. Still to be decided: which coats stay in here and which go into another closet. (My home doesn’t really have a coat closet.)
  4. For the hanger labels I found some little manila hangy things and wrote on each one: Season, Lifestyle Segment, Part of Wardrobe (bottom, top or layer), and a number corresponding to it’s rank in my wardrobe. Roughly, and this is specific to my wardrobe calculations based on the pie chart project and how many I need of each piece, the rank corresponds to years (1 is the new item, 2 is last years’ and so on).
  5. I will have to come up with a different labeling system for my dresser. Probably a sheet of paper in each stack, possibly laminated.

Knowing that I need clothes really badly and I’ll have birthday money in a little over a month gives me great incentive to get this project finished. I’ll keep you posted!

  1. okay, so our new, fab house is almost complete and we’re moving in around the first weekend in October (give or take – more likely give- a week).

My closet is/will be a smallish walk-in shared with my hero. Hero has a fair amount of clothing and is one of those types who prefer not to have the hangers all smashed in together, smushing his duds.

What I am getting around to – oh so slowly – is a plea for assistance and resources for free closet planning. I know we’ll need to maximize our layout to make it work and we have high ceilings, so we can do an extra high layer of hanging stuff to make it possible to keep even the “off season” in the closet year-round…. Ideas, oh smart and hip readers of Bex super blog?

  2. Dana ~ I have never thought of having a second layer of hanging above – what a great idea! I will post your comment on the front page and I will also start looking for resources for you. 🙂

    Congratulations on your house!

  3. gracias!

I have some digi photos, but it’s new construction, so no sense of scale, etc.

Things you might like to know when giving advice on this – the shape is square with one angled corner where the entry is – and that is a “no door” arched opening. the closet is wedged into one corner of the bathroom – I rise much earlier than the rest of the fam, so I will be able to get up, enter bath, close door to bedroom and stay there until I am ready for the day. You may not need to know that, but the idea excites me….

  4. This is a brilliant idea.. when I get my closet, I normally organize by type (tank tops, short-sleeved tops, t-shirts, long-sleeved, turtleneck, etc) and by colour… from red > black 🙂

    I’ve never thought about a lifestyle segmentation…

  5. I do the same at Fab Broke with organizing. Funnily enough, my husband has two thirds and I have a third. I’m not a huge clothes person. I don’t have tons of stuff…LOL… We too have the double layer but I would like more space between the bars if we do that in our own home.

    God bless, Rebecca!

  6. Wow, you are one ambitious woman! Mine is organized like Fabulously Broke’s is. I never thought about doing it the way you are, but it totally makes sense! Sometimes I overlook a certain piece, just because it’s further back in the closet, but if it were with other pieces that I’d be wearing at the same time, I might remember it! Great idea!

  7. I organize my wardrobe by Lifestyle category as well, but you couldn’t pay me to label my hangers–I’d never actually take the time to match the article to its hanger after washing! You are hyperorganized! Brownie points for you!

  8. Cool! (that you organize by lifestyle category) 🙂

I am still in the process of this project. We’ll see if I like it long-term. So far, matching the article to it’s hanger isn’t a problem, but I may find the hang-tags a little messy looking for me.
